Page Six reported on May 27th that legendary singer Madonna has candidly shared about her difficult background and harsh living conditions before she became famous. In an exclusive interview with Ankur Jain, founder and CEO of Bilt, the 67-year-old singer recalled the terrifying memories of when she was 19 and had just moved to New York City.
In the late 1970s, after breaking up with her ex-boyfriend because he wouldn't let her be the lead singer in his band, Madonna found herself homeless. To cope with the biting cold of the New York winter, she was forced to secretly move into an unheated building.
The Material Girl singer recalled the near-fatal accident with shock: "I had to sleep on the floor with a sleeping bag and put some heaters around me. Due to a short circuit, I accidentally caused a fire. I was fast asleep at the time, so when I woke up, I found myself surrounded by flames."

A turning point that changed Madonna's life.
After narrowly escaping death in a fire, Madonna took refuge in The Music Building in Manhattan, New York. This was a communal housing facility for the underprivileged who were striving to pursue their musical dreams.
The seven-time Grammy winner recounted that back then, each small room housed two to three bands for living and rehearsals. To find a place to sleep, she had to share a room with strangers and place her pillow right next to her bass drum. Even before coming here, she had spent time in an abandoned synagogue in Queens, New York. Looking back on those difficult days, the "Queen of Pop" affirmed that she worked tirelessly, doing everything she could to make a living and not shying away from any job.

Having experienced hardship in her youth, "Queen of Pop" Madonna has always actively used her influence to protect women's rights and carry out charitable campaigns to support disadvantaged people in society.

After about a year of struggling at The Music Building, a great turning point came for the 19-year-old. Madonna caught the eye of DJ Mark Kamins at the Danceteria club in the Lower East Side after sending him a demo tape. Thanks to this, she officially signed her first recording contract with Sire Records in 1982 and released her lead single, " Everybody ." The difficult period officially ended, ushering in an era of global music dominance with a series of chart-topping hits on the Billboard Hot 100, such as "Like a Virgin" (1984), and a prestigious Grammy Award in 1992.
Reportedly, Bilt, in collaboration with Madonna, is running a program to provide a month's rent subsidy at The Music Building for underprivileged musicians. Bilt also announced the release of a limited-edition vinyl version of the singer's upcoming album, titled Confessions On A Dance Floor: Part II, scheduled for release on July 3rd.
The album Confessions On A Dance Floor: Part II will revisit the early years of her career, including a special track titled Danceteria as a tribute to the club that saved her life.
