(CPV) – In an environmental cleanup campaign, the Nepalese army collected 35,700 kg of waste left behind by climbers on the country's mountains.
This Clean Mountain campaign was carried out from March 28 and ended on World Environment Day (June 5) to clean up the environment at Mount Everest, Lhotse, Annapurna and Baruntse.
The 97-member team faced harsh weather conditions to collect trash and clean up the mountains. Two local mountain guides were killed and four soldiers were injured during the operation.
Every year, mountaineers leave behind a large amount of trash during their treks, creating a challenge in waste management in Nepal.
A record climbing season has left parts of Mount Everest looking like a rubbish dump, littered with discarded tents and equipment. One experienced local climber has described the mountain as the “dirtiest” he has ever seen.
Initiated in 2019, the Clean Mountain campaign has collected about 190 tons of trash from different mountains.
In 2014, the Nepalese government launched an initiative to prevent littering on Mount Everest. Accordingly, each tourist will have to pay 4,000 USD to climb Mount Everest. But if anyone comes down the mountain with about 8 kg of trash, that person will be refunded the entire amount./.
