Russian army focuses on breakthrough on southern Donetsk front

Over the weekend, units of the Southern Group of Forces (Vostok Group) of the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) continued to break through the defenses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) on the southern Donetsk front, in the Shakhtyorsk, Vremevsky and Pologsk regions. All attempts by the AFU to counterattack were repelled, suffered significant losses and had to retreat to their original positions.

In addition, the units of the Vostok Group took control of the strategically important village of Otradnoye, which served as a bridgehead for the Russians to attack the fortified Ukrainian area of ​​Komar. Thus, the Russians formed an initial encirclement of the Komar stronghold in three directions: northeast (from Bogatyr), east (from Otradny) and south (along the Mokrye Yaly River).

Currently in this area, the Vostok Group mainly uses artillery fire attacks, actively and widely uses FPV UAVs and flexible maneuvering of attack groups, leading to the AFU's defense line being constantly stretched. In addition, the AFU lacks artillery fire and troops, leading to the continuous loss of villages in the South of Donetsk.

Meanwhile, west of Velikaya Novoselka, the Vostok Group is also continuing its advance into the village of Zelenoye Pole. Currently, about two-thirds of the village is under Russian control. What is special about this village is that it is located at the intersection of three Ukrainian provinces: Donetsk, Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk Oblasts.

Russia's Rybar channel reported that the Vostok Group continued to advance towards the border of Dnepropetrovsk Oblast from south of Pokrovsk. After overrunning the village of Otradny, part of the Bogatyr-Komar defense line, the Vostok Group units continued to advance towards Komar, capturing a landing zone to the west and consolidating their positions south of the Bogatyr-Komar defense line, blocking the approaches to the village of Komar from the east.

To the north of Otradny, across the H15 highway, Russian reconnaissance operations are currently underway to seize the landing bridgehead on the southern bank of the Volchya River. Earlier, the Russian Vostok Group had attacked and taken control of Otradny in less than two days.

Thus, along with control of Otradny, about 3 km of the H15 highway leading to the Zaporizhia region is also under the control of the Vostok Group. The Military Summary channel reported that the units of the Vostok Group are focusing on eliminating the remaining pockets of resistance of the Ukrainian army, southwest of Otradny, as well as expanding the area of ​​control towards the village of Komar.

For the AFU in the South Donetsk region, after the fall of Velikaya Novoselka, Komar in the extreme west of Donetsk Oblast, near the border with Dnepropetrovsk Oblast, became an important defensive center in this direction, but now it will be extremely difficult for them to hold it.

Earlier on May 6, Russia's TASS news agency, citing sources from the Russian Ministry of Defense , reported that the Russian air force used FAB-1500 heavy guided glide bombs to destroy the command post of the 46th Airborne Brigade of the Ukrainian Army (AFU) in the village of Komar, killing about 20 Ukrainian soldiers.

The Russian Aerospace Forces regularly use FAB-1500 guided glide bombs and guided glide bombs (UMPK) to destroy fortified AFU positions or fortified positions. These bombs are dropped by Russian fighter aircraft from outside the range of AFU field air defense systems.

Previously on May 5, also near the border area between Dnepropetrovsk and Donetsk provinces, the positions of units of two AFU brigades, the 113th Territorial Defense Brigade and the 79th Air Assault Brigade, were attacked by the Russian Air Force with FAB-500 guided glide bombs; killing about 30 Ukrainian soldiers.

As Military Review reported, Otradny is the northwesternmost point of the Ugledar Heights; the village is located about 50 meters higher than Komar. This advantage could give the Russians more visibility and more effective use of FPV UAVs to attack Ukrainian positions in the same Komar area, about 4 kilometers away.

It is worth noting that, just like in the village of Bogatyr, which was overrun by Russian troops not so long ago, around the village of Otradny, the Ukrainian army also created a defense network, including the use of natural shelters; turning this place into a large fortified area.

Judging that the RFAF is focusing its attacks on the south of Donetsk, the AFU General Staff is trying to build a new defense line in the east of the Dnepropetrovsk region in the area of ​​the villages of Mezhevaya and Novopavlovka.

The day before, units of the RFAF 90th Guards Tank Division, which had advanced south of the villages of Gorikhove and Bogdanovka, covered the right flank of the attack on the village of Alekseyevka. The Ukrainians were in danger of losing Novonikolaevka and Sergeyevka; fierce fighting was currently taking place there; the AFU was sending reinforcements and trying to hold this line of defense.

Thus, in the southern direction of Donetsk (Novopavlovsk) under the control of the Vostok Group, the AFU formations were pushed back from Otradny; although the AFU counterattack was unsuccessful.
