The Russian flag was raised in the town of Novonikolaevka in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in central Ukraine, which the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) recently took control of, Military Review reported. Novomykolaivka is located about 4 km southwest of Ternove, which the RFAF had previously captured. The actions of the RFAF Eastern Group of Forces, which captured the village of Novomykolaivka, allowed the Russian troops to advance 15 kilometers into Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. According to Military Review, in the fierce battles for Novomykolaivka, about a company of Ukrainian troops was destroyed and more than 5 square kilometers of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast territory was controlled by the RFAF.
In addition, in the Dnepropetrovsk region, the RFAF's Uragan multiple launch rocket batteries destroyed trenches, mortar positions and Ukrainian troops in the area of the village of Kalynivske, located just northwest of Novomykolaivka. Meanwhile, the village of Berezove, north of Novomykolaivka, is also under attack by Russian troops. Since September, the RFAF Eastern Group's offensive on Dnipropetrovsk has been accelerating rapidly, with a steady pace of "capturing a village every three days." In total, five villages were under RFAF control by September 2025. Novomykolaivka became the twelfth village in the Dnipropetrovsk region to fall under RFAF control. It is important to note that the capture of Novomykolaivka by the Eastern Army Group is located on the border between Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts. This shows the high combat capabilities of the Eastern Army Group; thus, they can continue to expand into Dnipropetrovsk oblast, and at the same time put strong pressure on the Ukrainian troops in Zaporizhzhia oblast. After breaking through and taking control of the village of Novomykolaivka, the RFAF began advancing towards Berezove from the south and captured tree lines on the approach to the village. They also captured several tree lines on the heights north of Zaporizhzhia and began circling Ternove from the west.
As the RFAF breakthrough, which captured the tree line near the ravine north of Ternove, began to advance southwest toward the tree line north of Berezove, the Ukrainians were forced to withdraw from the village. The RFAF continued to advance westward through Zaporizhzhia province and advanced more than 5km to the village of Novoivanivka, Rybar reported. Further south, the RFAF reached the ravine east of Novoivanivka and took control of the rest of several heights, extending to the reservoirs to the southeast. The total area that Russian forces have gained control of in the Zaporizhzhia region in recent days is approximately 20.90 km². Previously, the Dnieper Group operated in the Zaporizhzhia direction, but its frontal attack encountered a dense and well-fortified Ukrainian defense system, so it advanced slowly. However, after the Eastern Group took complete control of the southern Donetsk region and continued to expand in the Dnepropetrovsk direction, it was able to support the Dnieper Group's attack in Zaporizhzhia. Since the AFU had not yet built a solid defense line on the border area between Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, the Russian Eastern Army Group launched an attack on Zaporizhzhia from the north, which was equivalent to attacking the AFU here from the rear flank. The capture of Novomykolaivka by Army Group East is not the biggest concern, which concerns the RFAF's further expansion of the bridgehead or the capture of more territory in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, but the possibility of an attack south into Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
If the RFAF Eastern Group captured Obratne and Temirivka, it could advance southwest along the highway to Gulyai-Polye. The fall of Gulyai-Polye would have serious consequences; it was an important transport and logistics hub for the AFU in Zaporizhzhia. Although the AFU had built a relatively strong frontal defense system in Gulyai-Polye, it was much weaker in the northeast. A breakthrough from the northeast by the RFAF Eastern Army Group would expose the AFU to attacks from both sides, increasing the pressure on the defense system. If Gulyai-Polye is captured, the main AFU defense area in the town of Orekhiv, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, which is considered the bridgehead of the AFU's summer counteroffensive in 2023, will be seriously threatened. Of course, it is still too early to talk about the RFAF capturing Gulyai-Polye, but the situation is definitely in Russia's favor.
But if the RFAF Eastern Group does not seize the opportunity to attack Zaporizhzhia from Dnipropetrovsk at this time, when the AFU has not yet consolidated its defense line, it may lose its best chance to attack. If it is just a little slower, the AFU will have time to build a new defense system, and then the RFAF will have to spend a lot of effort to break through.
