Outgoing US President Joe Biden said on January 13 that China will never surpass the US. During his four years in office, Washington managed a relationship with Beijing that “never degenerated into conflict”.
Commenting on Joe Biden's remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said: Over the past four years, China-US relations have experienced ups and downs, but have generally remained stable. Under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden, the two sides have consulted and formulated a number of guiding principles for bilateral relations, engaged in dialogue and cooperation, restored and established more than 20 communication mechanisms, and achieved results in a number of areas.
Mr. Guo Jiakun stated that China is steadfast in its principles, safeguards its sovereignty, security and development interests, and "responds to the wrong actions of the US with resolute countermeasures."
During his meeting with President Joe Biden in Lima, Peru on November 16, 2024, President Xi Jinping reviewed the experiences and drew lessons from the practical relations over the past four years, specifically having the right strategic awareness, matching words with actions, treating each other equally, not challenging red lines and bottom lines, conducting more dialogue and cooperation, meeting people's expectations, and demonstrating the responsibility of a major country.
Referring to the Chinese leader's comments two months ago, spokesman Guo Jiakun expressed "hope that the US will remember those things and cooperate with China in this direction".
