This is not an unexpected result after a long time Quang Hai could not find a place at Pau FC. His representative, Michele Fersini, said that he had a direct discussion with Pau FC President, Bernard Laporte Fray, and reached an agreement to terminate the contract 1 year early.
In the early stages of his time at Pau FC, Quang Hai was given a lot of playing time by coach Didier Tholot. However, the midfielder from Dong Anh could not show much and was often forced to sit on the bench. President Fray also said that apart from his physical and language limitations, Quang Hai met the requirements to adapt to the strength of Ligue 2.
Vietnamese football needs more quality players like Quang Hai to think about goals outside the region.
In fact, these are issues that have been warned by some prestigious experts of Vietnamese football early when Quang Hai revealed his dream of challenging himself in Europe. Before Quang Hai, other cases of Vietnamese football such as Cong Phuong and Doan Van Hau had tried their hand at European tournaments but were unsuccessful. Besides the professional, physical and fitness factors, the differences in culture, language, cuisine , etc. are all big barriers that are not easy to overcome for Vietnamese players.
Vietnamese football needs more quality players like Quang Hai to think about goals outside the region.
To put it simply, in Asia, Japan and South Korea are two of the top nations, regularly participating in the World Cup. However, the number of Japanese and South Korean national players who can compete in Europe can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Meanwhile, the highest achievement of the Vietnamese team so far is only reaching the final qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia.
Help Vietnamese football evaluate its true strength
Quang Hai and Van Hau previously shared the same agent. Looking at Quang Hai's choice, it can be believed that he has learned from the previous unsuccessful trip abroad of Doan Van Hau, his teammate at Hanoi FC. Pau FC is only a young team in Ligue 2, but it is clearly still too much of an environment for Quang Hai.
Such analysis does not mean that Quang Hai's trip was a complete failure. On the contrary, it is a great encouragement and his aspiration deserves to be applauded. If it were purely for income, Quang Hai would have had many better options in both the V-League and the Thai-League. Quang Hai chose Europe as a time to explore his own abilities, to break out of his comfort zone. Two years at Pau FC were also a valuable experience for Quang Hai to learn from.
It is believed that in the future, Vietnamese players will have more overseas trips, and they will be better prepared to achieve new successes. Quang Hai's trip also partly helps Vietnamese football to correctly assess its own strength, thereby making more realistic plans.
Over the past five years, Quang Hai and Vietnamese football have achieved many successes, and football fans and people working in the field have also been soaring, setting big ambitions. One of them is to win a place in the 2026 World Cup. That is an inevitable trend when Vietnamese football has won enough titles at the regional level.
However, it requires a long-term accumulation process, a synchronous preparation plan, in which the force factor is indispensable. To be qualified for the World Cup, Vietnamese football not only needs a World Cup-class coach but also players of equivalent quality.
