(NLĐO) - LiDAR technology - using lasers to locate hidden structures - has helped Romanian scientists make a "sensational discovery in the Neamț forest".
A research team led by the National Institute for Earth Physics Research and Development of Romania has published a mysterious image in which a laser beam revealed a quadrilateral structure emerging from the forest, next to a river in the Neamț district.
According to Heritage Daily , it is one of several ancient fortifications, belonging to fortified settlements that were built here 5,000 years ago.
The research team described what they found in the forest as a "sensational discovery".

The newly identified ancient settlements stretch from the Neamț forest of Romania to the Subcarpathian region of Moldova.
Professor Vasile Diaconu from the Neamț National Museum Complex said: “LiDAR scanning shows that most fortified sites are located in high areas with good visibility and are reinforced with ditches and even mounds to increase their defensive capabilities.”
LiDAR is a surveying method that measures the distance to a target by illuminating the target with a surrounding laser beam and measuring the reflected pulses with a sensor.
This technique could help researchers "see" through tree canopies to create 3D maps of structures that have been covered by layers of vegetation for thousands of years.
Field measurements also revealed some of the ditches, described as "impressive in size," reaching several hundred meters in length and requiring considerable effort to construct.
It is estimated that these settlements were in use from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age.
The study also used the same non-invasive technology to examine a known structure in the aforementioned forest, known as Neamț Fortress, a medieval fortress built in the 14th century.
