Congressman Chong Zhemin was harsh on the national team scandal. |
The Star reported that many members of Malaysia’s parliament expressed outrage over the national team’s naturalization scandal. Chong Zhemin said: “There is a possibility that there have been violations of the law involving the falsification of official documents, which requires a thorough investigation and immediate action by the authorities.”
He also called on the Malaysian Parliament to debate and decide on the measures that the government should take immediately, including making information available to the public on the actions to be taken against FAM and any individuals involved in the alleged wrongdoing.
"This issue is raising serious concerns about transparency in sports management, the naturalization process for athletes, as well as the supervision of official documents," Mr. Chong Zhemin emphasized.
Previously, on her personal page, Malaysian Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh affirmed that the announcement from FIFA regarding the 7 naturalized players of the national team is a very serious issue, negatively affecting the image of Malaysia.
Ms Yeoh stressed: "FAM said it was just a technical error, a staff error, but all need to improve. This 19-page statement contains very serious statements by FIFA, tarnishing the image of the country."

Hector Hevel was born in the Netherlands and there is no documentation to prove his grandparents were born in Malaysia. |
Malaysian media believe that it is possible that FAM is not simply making a "technical error" but is assisting or even participating in an organized crime network.
Earlier this month, two passport forgery rings – one directly linked to the mother-in-law of a Malaysian national team player – were uncovered by police in the country.
Gombak District Police (under the direction of the Commercial Crime Investigation Division) raided an apartment, arresting a 46-year-old Malaysian woman – identified as the mother-in-law of a national team player – and four Pakistani men (aged 39-47).
The woman - the mother-in-law of the Malaysian player - is said to be the leader, cooperating with her foreign husband (also arrested earlier), and the ring has been operating since the beginning of the year in Shah Alam.
In addition, another passport fraud ring has been under investigation since July. Four Malaysian border officers have also been detained on charges of corruption and abuse of power.
The officers, who also worked in Johor Bahru – the Malaysia-Singapore border crossing – were being investigated for allegedly accepting bribes to stamp passports without the passport holders being present.
