Learn pottery from “special artisans”
Right in the center of Hue City, the pottery making experience at the Hope Center for Vocational Training and Employment for People with Disabilities and Underprivileged Children brings unforgettable moments of experience.
From Monday to Saturday every week, when experiencing pottery making at Hope Center, visitors will be guided to make cups/glasses/bowls of their choice according to basic techniques, learn to mold on a pottery wheel and decorate products according to personal preferences. The most special thing is that participants will be guided by the center's disabled staff. This is an experience that also creates jobs for disadvantaged young people. Currently, the center is implementing pottery making experience packages: 1 session, 5 sessions and 10 sessions. The pottery samples will take 10 to 30 days (depending on weather conditions) to dry and fire. For visitors from far away, the center will send products by post .
The pottery workshop is surrounded by clay blocks, rotating tables and many Raku pottery products placed on shelves. People who are mute, deaf, mentally disabled, etc. when coming to this pottery workshop are "organized" to become special workers. Every day, Raku pottery products are meticulously and responsibly made by their hands. There are about 20 disabled people working in the pottery workshop. When tourists and locals come to experience, they are the ones who support and guide the participants to complete their products. Although they cannot speak clearly, their friendly smiles and responsible gestures in each movement help the participants, especially children, gain basic knowledge about pottery making techniques and passionately create in their own way. An Nhien, 8 years old, Vinh Ninh ward, Hue city, is very excited when her parents take her to experience here. After nearly 2 hours of getting acquainted and experiencing pottery making with clay, molds, etc. under the guidance of "special artisans", An Nhien was very happy to create pottery products in the shape of her favorite animals.
“Raku tour” full of love
After a long period of development under the enthusiastic support of Mr. Olivier, students at the Raku pottery workshop can now confidently act as direct guides for customers right at their own pottery workshop. With the “Raku tour” tourism model, visitors can enjoy the products they have made right away; while people with disabilities can integrate and benefit from the tour cost. This is a humane, warm and loving tourism model.
Vocational training and job creation facility for disabled children and children in difficult circumstances named Hope is a common home for unfortunate lives and unlucky children in Hue city. The Hope Center was established in 1999, initiated by Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong and Ms. Le Thi Huong, Thuan Thanh Trade - Service Cooperative. Initially, the center only taught sewing, then expanded to rattan weaving, handicrafts, brocade weaving... Since the launch of the Raku pottery workshop and the provision of "Raku tour" service, the center has welcomed many domestic and international tourist groups to experience. This is an interesting tourism model, more than anything, "Raku tour" is also a meaningful activity, contributing to helping people with disabilities integrate into the community - Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, Director of the Hope Center said.
