He is the most in-form player in 2023, reaching 6 finals on the ATP Tour, winning 5 titles. Despite being known as the "king of hard courts", Medvedev won the Rome Masters on clay just last week. It was thought that this would be the perfect start for Medvedev at Roland Garros.
Wild created a stir when he defeated world number two Medvedev |
But in the first round, Russian tennis player Medvedev had to put away his racket to the Brazilian tennis player currently ranked 172nd in the world. It was truly the biggest "earthquake" at Roland Garros this year.
Medvedev had to remind himself not to get too complacent, because despite winning the Rome Open for his first clay-court title, Roland Garros would be a different level of difficulty. Medvedev's game on the surface has been tweaked to be more effective and he took advantage of the absence of many strong opponents to win in Rome, but in Paris all the big guns were there.
Medvedev's first task, however, is to overcome his first-round opponent, Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild. Wild, 23, won the US Open junior title in 2018 and in 2020 defeated Casper Ruud to win the Santiago Open clay-court title at the age of 19.
After two years of poor results, Wild has performed well in doubles this year and has regained his form in singles at Challenger tournaments.
Second seed Daniil Medvedev had a tough time against world No. 172 Thiago Seyboth Wild.
Medvedev entered Roland Garros this year with great confidence after winning the Rome Open. As the second seed, the Russian was expected to go deep in the tournament in France but the unexpected happened early on.
In the first set, Medvedev started well, breaking Wild's first serve. In game 4, the Russian was forced to break again, bringing the score to 2-2. The two players then played a tug-of-war and had to enter a tie-break. Here, Wild won 2 mini breaks compared to only 1 for Medvedev, thereby winning 7-5.
In the second set, Medvedev and Wild both played tight. Each had a few break points but neither player was able to capitalize. The match once again went into a tie-break, but this time it was Medvedev who won with a score of 8-6.
In set 3, Medvedev won 3 breaks and only had Wild break his serve once. The Russian won this game 6-2. However, Wild surprisingly won 6-3 in set 4 to bring the match into a deciding set 5.
Here, the two players gave the audience a "shower" of breaks, of which 3 were for Wild and 2 belonged to Medvedev. The match ended with a 6-4 victory for the young Brazilian player. After more than 4 hours, Wild won the right to enter the second round of Roland Garros.
Gael Monfil successfully came back after 5 sets while "Little Federer" quickly defeated his opponent.
Gael Monfils has just successfully come back against Sebastian Baez in the first round of Roland Garros. After losing the first set 3-6, the French player responded by winning 2 consecutive sets with the scores of 6-3 and 7-5. However, Baez equalized in the fourth set, winning 6-1. In the deciding set, Monfils lost 0-4 but still turned the tables and won 7-5, thereby winning the match 3-2.
Dimitrov shows his class Facing only qualifier Timofey Skatov, "Little Federer" Grigor Dimitrov showed his class. The Bulgarian won 3-0 in the first set and continued to win 6-3 and 6-2 in the next 2 sets, thereby ending the match in less than 2 hours.
Young talent Holger Rune advances Holger Rune has just advanced to the second round of Roland Garros after defeating Eubanks with a score of 3-1. In the first set, Rune won with a score of 6-4 but lost 3-6 in the second set. In the third set, the two players needed a tie-break to decide and Rune was the winner. In the fourth set, Eubanks ran out of steam and Rune won 6-2 to end the match.
Taylor Fritz won easily Taylor Fritz had a fairly easy victory in the first round of Roland Garros when facing his compatriot Michael Mmoh. In the first two sets, Fritz had 2 break points to end the set with a score of 6-2 and 6-1. In the third set, Fritz did even better with 3 break points, thereby winning 6-1 and winning 3-0 overall.
Zverev showed his mettle against Harris. Lloyd Harris is ranked 267 places lower on the world tennis rankings than Zverev. However, in the first two sets, Harris played extremely uncomfortably. He dragged Zverev into a tie-break, but unfortunately lost both times.
Having been exhausted continuously without any results, Harris entered the third set with low spirits. That was an opportunity for Zverev to win 6-1. In the end, Zverev won the ticket to the next round with a 3-0 victory, the scores were 7-6 (6), 7-6 (0), 6-1.
Casper Ruud has a successful start Casper Ruud is the fourth seed of this year's tournament. He plays quite well on clay courts and is considered one of the players who can challenge for the championship. In the opening match, Ruud faced his opponent Elias Ymer of Sweden. In terms of skill and strength on clay courts, Ruud is clearly superior. So it was no surprise when Ruud quickly defeated his opponent after only 3 sets with the scores of 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 and entered the next round. With the "earthquake" from world number two Medvedev, this year's Roland Garros promises to be exciting and dramatic matches.
