Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) is depicted in the pages of small books.

Like in previous years, Kim Dong Publishing House continues to bring you the publication "Enjoying the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026," a collection of 21 poems, essays, songs, and paintings on the theme of spring and Tet (Lunar New Year) by various authors, specially designed for young readers and their families to enjoy together.

In addition, Kim Dong Publishing House also offers interactive books printed on hardcover with rounded corners for children's safety, including "Let's Arrange Tet Jam!" and "Let's Wrap Banh Chung!". Each page is divided into three sections, each featuring different types of jam and ingredients, allowing children to flip through pages and assemble the images to create unique jam trays or banh chung. Also for the whole family is the novel "Tet and Mother" by young author Nguyen Duong Quynh, with a heartwarming message about healing wounds between family members, especially during Tet.

“In recent years, readers have begun to develop the habit of reading books during Tet (Lunar New Year), so many publishing houses are focusing on producing this type of book, especially children's books. Therefore, books for children are becoming increasingly diverse, ranging from poetry to prose, from comics to art books, interactive books... and are being positively received by children. Not only domestically, but Vietnamese children abroad are also very interested,” shared writer Van Thanh Le, Director of Kim Dong Publishing House's branch in Ho Chi Minh City.

Many years ago, Dinh Ti Books established the "Storyteller's Book Collection," focusing on publications about Tet (Vietnamese New Year) for children, such as: "The Best Fairy Tales About Tet," "Tet Poems for Children," "Warm and Loving Tet," and "Swallows Flying Across the Country - Peaceful Tet." This year, Dinh Ti Books launched the short story collection "Fireworks on New Year's Eve," featuring seven short stories written in a gentle style, conveying to children the beautiful customs of Tet as well as the meaning of family bonds. It can be said that the market for Tet books for children is gradually taking shape, representing a promising market for domestic publishing houses to invest in.

Great books from new publications

Besides familiar publishers, this year's children's Tet book market sees the participation of several new publishers, namely Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House and Tre Publishing House. Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House presents the poetry collection "Tet of Yesteryear" by author Cao Mai Trang and illustrator Nhat Anh Pham. Cao Mai Trang is a familiar author of children's poetry with works such as "Mother's Childhood 1, 2" and "Little One Loves the Homeland"... Cao Mai Trang's poetry has a natural writing style, not overly elaborate in wording, mainly telling small stories through rhyme. "Tet of Yesteryear" is no different; the 50 poems in the five-word verse form are short stories and reflections on customs, daily life, and memories of holidays and Tet in her homeland, as a way to spread love and appreciation for her roots to children.

This year, many publishers have introduced innovative ideas in their children's Tet (Lunar New Year) book series, such as coloring books, helping children learn about Tet in a new and unique way. Examples include Bean Books with "Colors of Tet," Viva Books with "Coloring for Tet," Time Books with "I Enjoy the Festival," Minh Thang Books with "Tet and Traditional Vietnamese Festivals," and BeU Books with "Joyful Tet with a Multitude of Blooming Flowers"...

Making its debut in the children's Tet (Lunar New Year) book market, Tre Publishing House presents a series of books titled "Telling Stories about Festivals," with two titles: "Tet, the Season of Love" and "Everyone Has a Spring to Remember." Both are gentle stories for children aged 6 and up, evoking various aspects of the Vietnamese Tet holiday. Each book is not just a story, but a relaxing reading experience where children meet familiar characters, relive cherished emotions, and discover the meaning of festivals through simple things.

According to Ms. Dao Mai Ly, Head of Communications at Tre Publishing House, Tet customs change every year according to social life. Some things are rarely seen, such as the red firecracker pole, and some are different, such as where to cook banh tet (sticky rice cake), where to offer banh chung (square sticky rice cake), and the feast varies from family to family depending on their circumstances... "Through the book series 'Telling Stories of Festivals,' we want to convey to young children the core spirit of Tet: we hope that when they read the books, they will understand that this is an occasion for families to gather together, remember and be grateful to their ancestors, spend time spreading love and doing good deeds, and maintain virtuous words and actions in the hope of a prosperous new year," Ms. Dao Mai Ly said.
