Ten Hag's mistake cost Man Utd gold with Alvaro Carreras

Manchester United are regretting seeing Alvaro Carreras shine brightly for Real Madrid – a deal considered a big mistake under Erik ten Hag.

Alvaro Carreras is exploding in Real Madrid colors.

In January 2024, the "Red Devils" agreed to let Carreras go to Benfica on loan, with a buyout clause of only 6 million euros plus 3 million in additional fees. Few expected that after only one year, this left-back would explode in Portugal, before Real Madrid spent 50 million euros to bring him to Santiago Bernabeu last summer. Not stopping there, according to Spanish media, Carreras' value has now reached 80 million euros.

While MU struggled to find stability, the image of Carreras playing strongly for Real highlighted the waste. Ten Hag, who spent hundreds of millions of euros on controversial contracts such as Antony, Casemiro or Mason Mount, was criticized for not seeing the potential of this young talent.

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso could not hide his satisfaction: “Carreras’s personality and fighting spirit surprised me. He rarely makes mistakes, is highly focused and has very comprehensive tactical and technical qualities. The impact he brings immediately is wonderful.”

From being a “surplus” at Old Trafford, Carreras has now become a new hope at Bernabeu. He has played seven matches since the start of the 2025/26 season and promises to continue to participate in the fiery derby with Atletico Madrid this weekend.

For Man Utd, this is clear evidence of a wrong decision in personnel policy under Ten Hag - a mistake that could cost them a world-class full-back and tens of millions of euros in potential profits.
