On the afternoon of January 4, at the regular press conference of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism provided information on the verification and handling of the song "De ai can" performed by rapper B Ray, which is causing a stir and controversy on social networks.
Previously, at a music night taking place on the evening of December 19, 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City, rapper B Ray performed the song "De ai can" revolving around the guy's hateful attitude towards his ex-lover, the lyrics used negative, vulgar, and disrespectful words towards women.
On December 25, 2023, the song "De ai can" was posted on YouTube and entered the top trending with offensive content and similar lyrics.
A representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that they have worked with relevant agencies, representatives of the program organizer, Wonderful Entertainment Joint Stock Company, rapper B Ray's management representative and B Ray himself on this issue.
Working with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City, the management representative and rapper B Ray personally acknowledged his mistakes and proactively removed all products "De ai can" on digital platforms.
In addition to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Performing Arts has also stepped in to inspect the song “De ai can”. However, both of these units have yet to reach a final conclusion and decision.
Some people think that the fact that both the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City and the Department of Performing Arts got involved with this song is a bit heavy-handed.
Because rap is inherently crude and vulgar. Since rap originated from the streets and was used to express personal emotions, it is not surprising that it has crude and vulgar language.
However, it is not surprising that in America and the West. In Vietnam, when rap music was introduced, the majority of opinions still believed that "when in Rome, do as the Romans do".
Any music must first of all be a work of art, a cultural product, and this product must demonstrate civilization and be suitable for the culture of the majority of the public.
That is the reason why in the recently ended program "Rap Viet 2023", the organizers requested that the contestants not use "you - me" in their entries like in previous seasons.
In recent years, rap music has had a great attraction to Vietnamese youth. The rapper community in Vietnam is also growing stronger with many famous and influential names, including B Ray.
In 2023, B Ray is even the youngest judge among the judges of the show "Rap Viet".
Therefore, the involvement of authorities is necessary. And the violations of rapper B Ray related to the lyrics and content of the song "De ai can" need to be quantified and strictly handled to set an example for many other rappers.
Because using vulgar language or rap products with offensive content is not an isolated incident of B Ray but has been quite common in the rapper community in Vietnam, despite adjustments and orientations.
Still agree that rap is a genre of music where writers can express their views and perspectives with free and liberal words and language. However, that does not mean that the language in rap songs is allowed to exceed the moral standards of society!
