What surprises does Samsung have for tonight?

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Fold7 with an ultra-thin design, hoping to attract more users with the "most normal" foldable smartphone experience possible.

Galaxy Unpacked 2025, Samsung's next major event of the year, will take place at 9 PM on July 9th (Vietnam time). At this event, the South Korean company is expected to unveil a new version of the Galaxy Z series, alongside the next generation of the Galaxy Watch.

Samsung was one of the first companies to launch a foldable smartphone. Recently, several competitors such as Motorola, Google, Oppo, and Xiaomi have attracted attention by addressing many of the shortcomings of the Galaxy Z Fold, such as price, size, battery, and camera.

Under pressure from rivals, analysts predict the next Galaxy Z will feature significant design and hardware changes, helping to solidify Samsung's position and maintain its competitiveness. Additionally, AI and the healthcare ecosystem are also highly anticipated elements at tonight's event.

What's new in the Galaxy Z Fold7?

Samsung's video reveals a book-like foldable device with a camera similar to the Galaxy S Ultra. The message "Meet the Next Chapter of Ultra" also suggests that the next Galaxy Z will have significant hardware upgrades, at least on par with the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Based on rumors from 91mobiles , the Galaxy Z Fold7 Ultra will feature a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and a 200MP rear camera similar to the Galaxy S25 Edge. Meanwhile, the standard Z Fold7 version will have a slim and lightweight design.

Leaker Evan Blass also shared what he claims are images of the Galaxy Z Fold7 in three colors: blue, silver, and black. Based on the images, the Z Fold7 appears slim and has a protruding camera module similar to the S25 Edge.

Of course, everything is just a rumor. It cannot be confirmed whether the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Fold7 Ultra are two separate devices, or whether Samsung will combine them to launch a single Z Fold7 version.

In an interview with CNET , a Samsung representative emphasized that the slim and lightweight design of the Galaxy Z Fold7 promises an experience "similar to traditional smartphones."

“More than ever, these devices will closely resemble the design of traditional smartphones. Users are promised the feel of holding a regular smartphone, but can enjoy the benefits of a foldable smartphone,” said Drew Blackard, Vice President of Mobile Product Management at Samsung.

Making foldable smartphones the "normal"

From the first Galaxy Fold to the Z Fold6, the product's thickness has decreased by approximately 29%, and its weight has dropped by 37g. According to Samsung, this figure could be repeated with the upgrade from the Galaxy Z Fold6 to the Z Fold7.

Based on the specifications above, the Galaxy Z Fold7 could be approximately 8.64 mm thick when folded and weigh around 200 g.

“When Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 Edge, many people wondered what the point of a thin phone was if it still needed a case. Now, with Samsung delivering a foldable smartphone that feels as ‘normal’ as possible in the hand, things are becoming clearer,” CNET writer Abrar Al-Heeti emphasized.

According to analysts, creating a feel similar to a regular smartphone could help Samsung attract a new group of customers who are hesitant to step outside their comfort zone while still preferring bar-style smartphones.

"The average user has to make many trade-offs when changing a device they rely on so heavily. Nobody wants that to happen," said analyst Ryan Reith from IDC .

Despite the success of the Galaxy Z, foldable smartphones remain a niche market. According to a survey by CNET , approximately 50% of smartphone users are not interested in foldable phones.

If not Samsung, the only name that could take the market by storm is Apple. Based on rumors, the company could unveil a foldable iPhone as early as 2026.

Will there be a cheaper Galaxy Z Flip?

Besides the Galaxy Z Fold7, Samsung is likely to launch the Galaxy Z Flip7 in two versions. According to CNET , one model will be the standard Z Flip7 (an upgrade from the Z Flip6), while the other will be a cheaper version, similar to the Galaxy S FE series.

On the social media platform Weibo , a post by leaker Setsuna Digital suggests that the Z Flip7 will have a larger external screen than its predecessor (4.1 inches), nearly matching the 4-inch size of the Motorola Razr Ultra. Evan Blass also shared photos of several Z Flip7 color options, including blue, red, and black.

Besides the design, Samsung may upgrade the hardware for the Z Flip7. According to CNET , the product may be equipped with the Exynos 2500, a processor recently launched by Samsung.

With the Z Flip7 FE, Blass's images show a product with a similar appearance to the Z Flip6, featuring a 3.4-inch external screen. Given its affordable price, the product's specifications may be lower than the standard Z Flip7.

The biggest hurdle when transitioning to foldable smartphones remains the price. Last year, the Galaxy Z Fold6 cost $1,900 , while the Z Flip6 was $1,100 .
