Previous rumors have suggested Samsung is expected to launch its first foldable smartphone in 2025, while DCSS analyst Ross Young says the launch could be pushed back to 2026.
Unlike the Huawei Mate XT, Samsung's tri-fold smartphone will have a G-style folding form.
Now, a new report not only reveals design details but also suggests that Samsung's tri-fold smartphone could be introduced alongside other foldable smartphones in the second half of this year.
Which direction will Samsung choose for its tri-fold smartphone?
Unlike the Huawei Mate XT's S-shaped folding screen design, Samsung has opted for a G-shaped folding design, which allows the phone to fold inwards twice. This design is expected to be more durable and protect the screen from damage, which is important because folding screens are often fragile.
When folded, the phone is completely encased, protecting the screen from impacts and scratches. When opened, the device has an impressive screen size, providing a tablet-like experience. Initial production is expected to be limited to around 300,000 units, similar to the strategy Samsung used with the Galaxy S25 Slim.
Additionally, it is reported that Samsung may equip its tri-fold smartphone with the first foldable battery, but the under-display camera (UDC) technology may be scrapped due to image quality concerns. An industry source said that Samsung's tri-fold smartphone will have three display panels, two internal hinges and two external hinges. Along with that, improved hardware technologies lead to higher production costs compared to the company's current foldable smartphones.
In terms of price, Samsung is said to keep the price high due to the technology and additional components, but the company may also consider keeping the price at a reasonable level, especially when Huawei's tri-fold smartphone launched at around $2,800 but failed to meet sales expectations.
