According to engineer Luu Minh Hai, former Director of Lao Cai Province's Hydrometeorological Station, at noon on December 16, a very strong cold front swept down Lao Cai province, causing scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places.
The temperature dropped rapidly, the weather turned cold, the mountainous areas were severely cold, and severe cold covered a wide area.
At 7:00 a.m. on December 17, the lowest temperature was observed in some places in the province, including Lao Cai city with a temperature of 15.6 degrees Celsius, Pho Rang town (Bao Yen district) with a temperature of 14.8 degrees Celsius, highland areas of Bac Ha district with a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, and Sa Pa tourist town with a temperature of 7.6 degrees Celsius.
Mr. Hai said that people in Lao Cai province, especially in mountainous districts such as Bat Xat, Muong Khuong, Bac Ha, and Simacai, need to continue to take measures to prevent and combat the cold for people, crops, and livestock according to the direction of the Provincial People's Committee.

According to the Lao Cai Province Hydrometeorological Station, the Northeast monsoon continues to spread to the northern mountainous areas and Lao Cai Province. It is forecasted that on the day and night of December 17, localities in Lao Cai Province will have light rain in some places, and light rain and scattered drizzle in mountainous areas. The weather will be very cold, with severe cold in the highlands and severe cold in the highlands.
Temperatures are still dropping so frost is forecast to appear and cause damage in the districts of Bat Xat, Muong Khuong, Bac Ha, Si Ma Cai and the peak of Fansipan Sa Pa is likely to have snowfall.
Tonight, the lowest temperature will drop to 12-14 degrees Celsius; in mountainous areas it will range from 8-10 degrees Celsius; in Sa Pa town it will drop to 5-7 degrees Celsius.
On December 16, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Lao Cai province sent an urgent telegram to relevant departments, branches, districts, towns and cities under Lao Cai province, requesting them to strengthen and proactively take measures to prevent cold for crops and livestock.
