Indian police said there were 28 workers on the bridge at the time of the accident, but local media reported there were 40 workers.
The collapsed railway bridge is part of the new Bhairbi-Sairang railway project being implemented by the North Eastern Frontier Railway (NFR). The company has promptly set up a special unit to investigate the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, an anonymous official said authorities had found 13 bodies and were working to find the remaining bodies.

Railways are one of the transportation systems used by millions of Indians to travel every day. NFR describes this project as connecting the state of Mizoram with the rest of the country, helping to promote tourism, economic and social development. With the goal of modernizing the railway network, the Indian Government has also deployed a high-speed train system, but many opinions say that India's train system does not focus on safety issues and the infrastructure is old and has not been upgraded.
In June 2023, India suffered its worst train accident in over 20 years, killing at least 288 people. The cause of the accident was a signal failure.
In October 2022, a bridge in Gujarat state also collapsed, killing 135 people.
