According to updated information, as of 3:00 p.m. on July 20, at least 11 people were killed and more than 30 people were missing in a highway bridge collapse due to torrential rain in Shaanxi Province, Northwest China, the day before.
Nearly 20 vehicles and more than 30 people are still missing after a bridge collapsed in Tac Thuy district, Cang Le city, state broadcaster CCTV reported. Eleven of the dead victims were found inside five vehicles that have been recovered so far.
The provincial government said the incident occurred on the evening of July 19 in Tac Thuy district, Thuong Lac city, due to heavy rain and sudden flash floods.
According to CGTN, 736 firefighters, 18 boats and 32 drones participated in the rescue operation after the bridge collapsed. China's Ministry of Emergency Management also sent a working group to the scene. Chinese President Xi Jinping called on rescue teams to make every effort to find the missing as soon as possible.
Earlier this month, 250,000 people in eastern China were affected after storms hit the region, causing the Yangtze and other rivers to swell. Also on July 19, at least five people were killed and eight were missing after rain caused flooding and landslides in the city of Baoji, also in Shaanxi province.
