Spain suffered a massive telecommunications network outage on May 20, leaving millions of people in the country unable to access the internet, make phone calls or use mobile data.
The incident also severely affected hotlines, including the pan-European emergency number 112.
According to local media, the incident occurred in most major cities in Spain, including Madrid, Malaga, Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia, Seville and Bilbao.
The incident appears to be linked to a network upgrade by the country's second-largest telecommunications group, Telefónica.
All major telecoms providers in Spain, including Movistar, Orange, Vodafone, Digimobil and O2, reported network outages.
The incident also disrupted emergency phone lines in some areas. The Valencia regional government has set up an alternative hotline to receive emergency calls while the 112 line is down.
Some businesses in Spain said they were unable to access systems, download software or connect to computers.
According to a Telefónica spokesperson, the system error occurred during the deployment of a network update and the group's engineers are currently working to fix it.
Telefónica is the operator of most of the mobile networks in Spain and operates telecommunications in 18 countries, making it one of the largest telephone operators and mobile network providers in the world .
This is the second major network failure to hit Spain in less than a month. On April 28, the country also suffered a widespread power outage that left millions of people in Spain and Portugal in the dark for nearly 10 hours.
The Spanish government has denied the possibility that this was a cyber attack./.
