Ho Chi Minh City A 51-year-old woman was weak, had poor appetite, and had persistent abdominal pain. The doctor discovered a large tumor on the left side of her liver, occupying the entire abdominal cavity.
The patient was diagnosed with a tumor in her abdomen 8 years ago. The doctor advised surgery, but she refused. Since then, the tumor has grown, causing her abdomen to swell as if she were pregnant, and the pain has increased.
On March 24, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Unit, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, said that the patient had a hemangioma in the liver. The tumor is benign but has a huge size. If open surgery is performed, it will cause pain and loss of aesthetics for the patient. In addition, the tumor has been pressing for a long time, the patient has poor eating and malnutrition, so the abdominal wall muscles are thin, making it easy for the abdominal wall to herniate later.
The doctors decided to perform laparoscopic surgery and were very careful because the large tumor was pressing on other organs in the abdomen. The surgeon faced many challenges when moving the liver, the possibility of the tumor rupturing, causing bleeding, and the risk of damaging other organs.
Before surgery, the patient had the blood vessels supplying the tumor blocked to reduce the size of the tumor as well as the risk of bleeding. The surgical team safely removed the entire liver tumor, then opened a section of about 20 cm to remove the entire tumor weighing more than 5 kg. The patient's health is stable and has just been discharged from the hospital.
Hepatic hemangioma is a benign tumor of the liver, mostly small in size and does not cause any symptoms. In most cases, the tumor does not change in size or increases very little, only about 2 mm per year. People with hepatic hemangioma need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and eat scientifically to keep the liver healthy, and have regular check-ups to monitor the tumor's growth.
