On September 30th, Hung Vuong General Hospital ( Phu Tho province ) shared that this was one of the surgeries with the largest number of kidney stones the hospital had ever received.
The female patient was admitted to the hospital with epigastric and right hypochondriac pain, accompanied by nausea and mild bloating. Upon examination and ultrasound, doctors discovered long-standing gallstones causing acute cholecystitis. The surgical team performed a laparoscopic cholecystectomy to remove the diseased tissue and prevent dangerous complications.
As a result, 130 gallstones of various sizes were removed from the patient's gallbladder. After the surgery, the patient was transferred back to the surgical department for further treatment and health monitoring.
According to doctors, gallstones are a condition where bile pigments are deposited, forming bile sludge or stones within the bile ducts, causing stagnation and obstruction of bile flow. This is one of the most common gallbladder diseases in tropical countries.
In some cases, gallstones or stones in the liver may not present with obvious symptoms, but when persistent pain occurs in the right flank: dull or severe pain radiating to the back or epigastric region; high fever, jaundice, yellow urine… it indicates that gallstones have caused serious complications.
Gallstones in the main bile ducts, including those in the common bile duct, common hepatic duct, and the initial segments of the right and left hepatic ducts, even when newly formed, cause more severe symptoms than gallstones in the gallbladder.
This condition also frequently causes dangerous complications such as septic shock from the biliary tract, biliary peritonitis, and biliary tract necrosis, requiring surgical intervention as soon as possible.
Those at high risk for gallstones include women over 40, obese individuals, those with sedentary lifestyles, and those with diets high in fat, so that they can be detected and treated promptly.
The doctor also advised patients to have regular health checkups to detect and treat problems early, avoiding dangerous complications.
