After a day of eating pig intestines and not eating blood pudding, the female patient was hospitalized in a state of septic shock, sepsis with meningitis caused by S.suis, and respiratory failure.

The patient had purple rash-like skin lesions all over the body.

A female patient (59 years old) in Hanoi was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, National Hospital for Tropical Diseases on August 2, in a state of breathing with an oxygen mask at 15l/min. The patient had difficulty breathing and had to switch to high-flow oxygen therapy (HFNC).

Four days ago, the patient and his family ate pig intestines (not blood pudding). No one else who ate with them had similar symptoms.

One day after eating pig intestines, the patient developed a high fever, continuous chills, loose stools 5 times a day, nausea, vomiting food, dull headache, and body aches.

On the second day, the patient developed purple-black patches on his face. His family took him to the medical facility in a lethargic state, with low blood pressure, purple skin lesions all over his body, and blood gas tests showed severe metabolic acidosis.

The patient was given oxygen with glasses/mask, continuous blood filtration, blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures for S.suis (streptococcus suis).

Doctors diagnosed the patient with septic shock, sepsis with meningitis caused by S.suis, respiratory failure, and slow improvement. The patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases. The patient's condition has now improved.

According to doctors, the bacteria that cause streptococcus suis are completely destroyed when food is thoroughly cooked. To prevent streptococcus suis, people should not eat raw blood pudding and uncooked pork products. Do not buy, sell, transport, or slaughter sick or dead pigs or unhygienic pork products.

People should not use pork that is unusually red, bleeding or swollen. Practice good personal hygiene when coming into contact with pigs or processing pork. When showing signs of illness, go to a medical facility immediately for timely examination and treatment...
