According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is planning the most sweeping change ever to its operating system name, part of a software overhaul that extends to all of its devices.
Specifically, an insider source revealed that Apple's next operating systems will be identified by year numbers, rather than version numbers. According to the source, that means instead of iOS 19, Apple will release iOS 26 this coming September. Other updates will be known as iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.
According to Gurman, Apple made the change to bring consistency to its branding and avoid an approach that could confuse customers and developers. Current operating systems—including iOS 18, watchOS 12, macOS 15, and visionOS 2—use different numbers because the initial versions didn't launch at the same time.
Before Apple, tech giants like Samsung and Microsoft also did the same with their software versions.
In 2020, Samsung changed the name of its Galaxy S series phones according to the year of launch, moving to Galaxy S20. The predecessor, launched in 2019, was the Galaxy S10, representing the 10th generation.
In 1995, Microsoft switched to naming its major operating systems by year of release, releasing Windows 95, followed by Windows 98 and Windows 2000.
Most likely, Apple will announce this change at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 on June 9.
The big difference for the iPhone maker is that it uses the upcoming year instead of the current one. Even though the next operating systems are expected to launch around September 2025, they will be named after 2026. If Apple sticks to this strategy, the next software update will be called iOS 27.
One of the most anticipated highlights of WWDC 2025 is the redesign of the new iOS. Previous leaks have predicted that iOS 19 (or iOS 26) will have a completely new look, which is said to be similar to the interface of visionOS.
Tech experts believe that Apple will focus on bringing a visual experience similar to visionOS to both iOS 19, iPadOS 19 and macOS 16.
While the specifics vary, users can expect more glassy and reflective interfaces, wallpapers, and buttons in the coming years. If implemented effectively, the change promises to be aesthetically pleasing.
