Seagate plans to launch a 100 terabyte (TB) hard drive by 2030 to meet the growing demand from AI companies for complex chatbots and other AI services.
HDD hard drives will have nearly 3 times more capacity than the current record in 5 years

Mr. BS Teh, Director of Global Commercial Operations and Strategy Development at Seagate, commented that with what has been proven, there will soon be significant demand for ultra-large drives based on magnetic storage technology.
Currently, Seagate's largest hard drive model is the 36TB Exos M, which the company introduced earlier this year. The company has also invested heavily in developing HDD-based solutions to increase storage capacity.
Seagate's Acumen in AI
Seagate is a pioneer in heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology, which increases data density by using laser diodes embedded in each recording head. Seagate is also working on NVMe HDDs to improve the reliability and durability of storage systems in enterprise and data center environments.
Like Nvidia and many other tech companies, Seagate has positioned itself as an “AI company,” showing its keenness to capitalize on the investment trends of the coming years. “A key factor in enjoying the surge in revenue in the AI industry is providing the storage capacity that AI companies need,” Teh stressed. “Nothing beats hard drives to meet that demand.”
How AI Helps Decode Ancient Scrolls?
Although HDD technology is nearly 70 years old, it is still well-suited to the expected boom in AI data centers. However, analysts have also expressed concerns about the trend’s environmental impact. The International Energy Agency estimates that a single ChatGPT query consumes up to 2.9 watt-hours of electricity, while a Google search consumes about 0.3 watt-hours.
To address environmental concerns, Seagate is focusing on reducing power consumption per terabyte and increasing data density in the new drives. Customers will benefit from reduced space, energy, and resource requirements when integrating these drives into their data centers, Teh said. The company is also working to reduce the environmental impact of its manufacturing facilities by using renewable energy sources.
