Serena Williams "indirectly criticized" the Sinner case: "If it were me, I would have lost the Grand Slam and been banned for 20 years"

Serena Williams has just attracted attention when she spoke frankly about the controversial doping case of Jannik Sinner - the world's number 1 tennis player from Italy. Accordingly, Sinner was banned from competing for 3 months after testing positive for the banned substance Clostebol twice in 2024.

He and his team claimed the substance came from a physiotherapist's wound cream and the disciplinary panel accepted the explanation, declaring Sinner "not guilty". The ruling shocked the tennis world.

On this issue, tennis player Serena, who has won 23 Grand Slam titles, affirmed that she has no personal problems with Sinner. Serena shared in an interview with TIME: "He is a great person. I like him, I love this sport . He is very good for tennis."

However, the American legend believes that if she were in a similar situation during her peak playing period, the consequences would be much more serious.

"I've been treated unfairly so many times, so I don't want to do that to anyone else. Men's tennis needs people like him. But if it were me (infected with doping), I would definitely be banned from competing for 20 years. Let's be honest. I would even be stripped of my Grand Slam title" - Serena expressed.

The lenient ruling on Sinner has also sparked controversy in the tennis world. Nick Kyrgios has publicly criticized it, while former player Tim Henman has said the timing of the suspension, just before Roland Garros, was "inexplicably perfect."

Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz is closing the gap with Sinner on the rankings and promises to create an exciting race at the upcoming Grand Slam tournaments. However, the echoes of this doping scandal may not have subsided yet.

In addition to Sinner, Serena Williams also mentioned Maria Sharapova, who was given a two-year doping ban in 2016 (reduced to 15 months on appeal), despite her infraction being unintentional. "It's weird, I can't help but think about Maria all the time. I can't help but feel sorry for her," Serena said.
