Sinner gets off to a phenomenal start at the Cincinnati Open.

Making his first appearance since defeating Carlos Alcaraz to win his first Wimbledon title last month, the world number one in the ATP rankings displayed a devastating performance, overcoming Daniel Elahi Galan 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the third round in just 59 minutes.

“Matches are always different from training sessions, so I didn’t know exactly what to expect today. Overall, I’m very happy. Playing here isn’t easy; the ball flies very fast. You have to serve accurately, but you also need good speed if you want to go far in the tournament,” Sinner shared after extending his lead against Galan to 3-0.

Despite wearing a protective arm brace on his right arm – a device he's used since his fourth-round Wimbledon fall last month – Sinner played with confidence upon his return to Cincinnati. The 23-year-old hit seven winners against five unforced errors and lost only one of his 13 first-serve points in an excellent opening set.

In the second set, Sinner began to add a bit of style to his signature steady play, highlighted by a cleverly disguised drop shot in the third game before finishing the match with great force.

“Today I felt I served exactly where I wanted to. There’s still room for improvement, but for a first-round match, I couldn’t ask for more. I’m so happy to be back here, the fans are amazing,” Sinner added.

With a 38-0 record against players outside the Top 50 since Cincinnati in 2023, Sinner has extended his winning streak on hard courts to 22 matches. This streak, which began after his loss to Alcaraz in the Beijing final last September, includes victories at the US Open, the Nitto ATP Finals, and the Australian Open.

Sinner and Alcaraz will be fiercely competing for the number one title of the year in the remaining months. Alcaraz will compete in Cincinnati on the morning of August 11th, currently leading Sinner by 1,500 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.

Sinner's next opponent at the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati is Gabriel Diallo. Sinner is aiming to become the first male player to successfully defend his title at this tournament since Roger Federer in the 2014-15 season.
