World number one tennis player Jannik Sinner has caused a huge controversy when he decided to reappoint fitness coach Umberto Ferrara - the man who was involved in the incident that caused him to test positive for the banned substance clostebol last year.
Sinner had previously terminated his partnership with Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi in August 2024, after being suspended for three months under an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The reason stemmed from Naldi's use of a spray containing clostebol, purchased by Ferrara himself, which led to Sinner being unintentionally exposed to the banned substance.
In an official statement, Sinner's team stressed: "Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development, and his return demonstrates his determination to maintain continuity and performance at the highest level, heading into the Cincinnati Open and US Open."

However, this decision quickly met with fierce criticism. Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios sarcastically posted on social media: "He hired the same coach again... We were fooled, ladies and gentlemen."
Meanwhile, former tennis player Paul McNamee also found it difficult to understand: "Jannik Sinner's reappointment of Umberto Ferrara is truly one of the most incredible decisions in tennis history."
After parting ways with Ferrara, Sinner continued to play extremely impressively, winning consecutive major titles such as the 2024 US Open, 2025 Australian Open, runner-up at Roland Garros and most recently the 2025 Wimbledon championship.
Ferrara's return to the team has fans wondering whether Sinner will successfully defend his US Open title and complete another stellar year.
