Traffic accidents continued to be controlled and decreased significantly compared to the same period in 2022.
Specifically, there were 428 fewer cases (-15.43%), 258 fewer deaths (-15.23%) and 148 fewer injuries (-8.57%). Traffic safety during the 7 days of the Lunar New Year of the Rabbit was basically ensured, the number of cases and deaths due to traffic accidents decreased compared to the same period of the Lunar New Year of the Tiger 2022 (the number of cases decreased by 7.3% and the number of deaths decreased by 3.3%). In particular, the number of traffic accidents caused by drivers violating alcohol concentration regulations during the Tet holiday decreased sharply compared to previous years. The number of traffic jams during peak periods was reduced compared to the same period in 2022 after the implementation of non-stop toll collection nationwide. The situation of violations of overloading vehicles in localities has been fundamentally handled.
In addition to the achieved results, the conference also stated that in the first quarter of 2023, there were still some shortcomings and limitations such as: There were still some particularly serious traffic accidents, killing and injuring many people, causing public outrage. Violations of road and railway traffic safety corridors have not been handled promptly. The situation of gathering, driving in groups, and signs of illegal racing still occurs in some provinces and cities. The situation of trucks not strictly following regulations on loading goods onto vehicles, causing goods to fall onto the road, causing traffic safety loss has not been thoroughly handled. Traffic congestion tends to increase, increasing by 15 cases compared to the same period in 2022.
Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee Tran Luu Quang acknowledged, highly appreciated and commended the central ministries, branches and localities for their efforts to significantly reduce traffic accidents in the first quarter. At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister highly agreed with the solutions proposed at the conference and noted: Traffic accidents are still numerous, the number of deaths and injuries is still high. Traffic safety violations are also numerous, and black spots causing traffic accidents have not been completely eliminated. There are also three major causes, which are that the implementation of responsibilities by public servants is sometimes and in some places not high. People's awareness of traffic compliance is not high. Some localities are not really interested in ensuring traffic safety.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that the upcoming situation will be very difficult, the socio -economic development, the means of transport are increasing. Traffic infrastructure has not met the demand. Although the awareness of people participating in traffic has changed, it is not enough to reduce traffic accidents. It is necessary to pay attention to 5 specific things: Must be more drastic, resolutely demonstrate full responsibility, strictly handle violations, especially with the intervention of officials in violations. There needs to be closer and more effective coordination in handling specific cases between forces, with decentralization to localities. Focus on propaganda work to raise people's awareness on many subjects, especially replicating good and effective models and experiences of localities. Party committees at all levels, authorities, and localities pay more attention to the work of ensuring traffic safety, considering this an important and top responsibility.
