The project was implemented following the proposal of a task force tasked with formulating a national strategy and plan for the development and application of AI in Sri Lanka.
Xinhua News Agency quoted Sri LankanEducation Minister Susil Premajayantha as saying that the pilot program to bring AI into schools will officially start from March 19.

Speaking at an event in the capital Colombo on March 3, Mr. Premajayantha said students will have the opportunity to access and learn about AI in the subject of information technology.
Initially, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Education will pilot the program for students from Grade 8 onwards. After evaluating the results of the pilot program, the ministry will be able to implement the program nationwide by 2025.
Teachers from 20 selected pilot schools are participating in training courses to be able to grasp and then accurately convey relevant skills and knowledge to students.
In recent times, some countries around the world have considered bringing AI into schools based on specific guidelines and regulations, ensuring the proper use of AI and not violating ethics.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science issued guidelines on the use of AI in schools in February.
Meanwhile, in Japan, in July 2023, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports , Science and Technology announced guidelines, allowing elementary, middle and high schools to use limited generative AI models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT.
