Samsung's announcement comes at the same time as Google introduced Android XR, a new operating system for XR devices that will compete directly with Meta's Horizon OS. Samsung's XR glasses not only impress with their familiar design, but also pose a big challenge to the Vision Pro, which many experts believe Samsung has the potential to win this race.
Samsung is really on the right track with its own XR glasses
One of the main reasons why the Vision Pro struggled to sell was its steep $3,499 price tag. While the Vision Pro was highly regarded for its technology, many consumers found the price point unreasonable. Former Oculus CEO Hugo Barra criticized the Vision Pro as an “over-engineered” product with a lot of redundant technology that increased the cost.
Furthermore, the Vision Pro lacks support for popular VR games, which forced Apple to partner with Sony to integrate the PSVR2 controller. However, the damage was done when the XR market was primarily for gaming.
Advantages for Samsung
While Apple has yet to improve the design of the Vision Pro's strap, Samsung is aiming to offer a more comfortable product at a more reasonable price. This is partly thanks to the Korean company having time to study the market's reaction to the Vision Pro and adjust the price of its product accordingly.
More importantly, Samsung has realized that refusing to admit mistakes like Apple is doing doesn’t do it any good. Unlike Apple’s visionOS, Android XR is open to all developers and is more accessible. Android XR introduced a number of convenient features, including support for VR controllers and an intuitive user interface—something visionOS lacks.
To get out of its current predicament, Apple needs to reduce the price of Vision Pro and develop a less premium version, perhaps called Vision Air. Furthermore, Apple needs to embrace the VR trend and provide support for existing games. Finally, a redesign of the product is necessary to create a headset that is lighter and more comfortable for users.
Clearly the future of Vision Pro depends on Apple's ability to adapt and innovate in this area.
