Last week, Apple released iOS 17.5.1 update for iPhones, which aims to fix an issue where previously deleted photos suddenly reappear on users' devices.
"This update provides important bug fixes and addresses a rare issue where photos that experienced database corruption could reappear in the Photos library even after they had been deleted," Apple said.
Apple explains the cause of the problem on iOS 17.5 comes from the way the NAND storage equipped on the iPhone works (Photo: MacRumors).
Speaking to 9to5mac , Apple explained that the cause of the above problem comes from the way the NAND storage equipped on the iPhone works. Accordingly, when a photo is deleted in the library, it is actually deleted inside the operating system.
However, the NAND memory used to store that photo marks the available location for another file to be overwritten. A system bug caused some files to persist due to a corrupted database. This bug occurred outside of the photo library, so deleted files do not disappear from the device.
On iOS 17.5, these files were restored from their corrupted state and reappeared inside the Photos app. Apple said this was a rare issue but did not share how many users were affected.
The iOS 17.5.1 update has now fixed the issue. For old photos that have reappeared on iOS 17.5, users will need to manually delete them from the photo library.
