Opportunities for domestic branded milk industry
It is undeniable that the milk market in recent years has had fierce competition in terms of brands and trademarks. Currently, there are hundreds of types of milk sold on the market from supermarkets, retail chains to grocery stores.
In addition to domestic and foreign milk, there are also products with imported raw materials packaged in Vietnam, making the milk market diverse. In stores called “milk worlds”, consumers are dazzled by brands and trademarks and do not know which product to choose, many people have to ask the sales staff for advice.
A survey of the milk market at this time shows that after the authorities announced the fake milk products, consumers immediately “turned around” to use domestic and foreign branded products. These are products that have been branded for decades, officially distributed through supermarkets, retail chains and have a solid position in the market. Typical products include Meiji (Japan), Nestle (Switzerland), Abbott (USA), Dutch Lady or Frisolac (Netherlands). Domestic brands include Vinamilk, TH True Milk, Nutifood, Dutch Lady, Moc Chau, Nutricare, etc.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen, owner of TiTi Mart store on Nguyen Tat Thanh street, Khai Quang ward, said: “After the recall of “grass milk” (fake milk), the consumption of domestic branded milk such as Vinamilk, Nutricare... increased significantly. In addition, foreign branded milk such as Meiji, Abbott, Frisolac... are also in high demand. However, at this time, the prices of some types of milk show signs of increasing, for example, Vinamilk increased by 16%, Nutricare increased by 14%, Grow Plus increased by 5%... even Vinamilk's powdered milk was out of stock at times.
At TiTi Mart, we found that this business has dozens of domestic and foreign milk brands. According to the owner, the authorities' intervention to "clean up" fake milk helps the market become more transparent, making it easier for consumers to access and use quality products from within and outside the country.
Or at Vinamilk's retail chain on Tran Quoc Tuan Street, Ngo Quyen Ward, Vinh Yen City, the number of customers has also increased noticeably in recent days.
Ms. Ha Thi Hang, a saleswoman, said: “Currently, in Vinh Yen city, there are 3 retail stores selling Vinamilk products and this location has the best revenue. Recently, the number of customers looking for Vinamilk products has increased, so sales have also increased by 20-30%. Regarding milk prices, all product lines have been adjusted to increase evenly according to the company's instructions and written notices and we are not allowed to arbitrarily adjust the selling price.”
Currently, Vinamilk's products are very diverse with dozens of types of milk for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and adults to supplement nutrients for the body to support weight gain, increase resistance, height development, brain development, etc.
Compared to imported milk lines, Vinamilk products as well as domestic milk brands are suitable for consumers' budgets, but there are also higher-end product lines for the segment of people with good incomes.
Strictly handle acts of hoarding and price increase.
Regarding the tendency of some types of milk to increase in price, according to the reflection of small traders, the products have been adjusted to increase many times in 2024 and up to now. The reason is due to the impact of inflation worldwide, high gold prices, and increased imported raw materials for milk production, affecting the cost of products.
It is known that in the meeting in February 2025 with investors, the leaders of Vietnam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk) informed about the production and business activities, including sharing about the tendency of raw material prices to increase again due to the impact of weather in Australia and New Zealand, causing the cost of livestock products of farmers in this area to increase.
In addition, the US market has been experiencing high inflation for many years, combined with natural disasters, which have affected the supply. Currently, many powdered milk manufacturers in Vietnam are having to import raw materials from the EU, Australia and New Zealand, so product prices will be influenced by external factors. Therefore, businesses must proactively stock up on raw materials and adjust product prices accordingly to the level of fluctuations, which will affect overall profits.
Currently, during the Food Safety Action Month 2025, the province's interdisciplinary food safety inspection teams are conducting large-scale inspections in various fields, including dairy products. At business establishments, the authorities will conduct inspections, checks, and controls on products, including dairy products, to promptly detect and handle any violations, if any.
At the same time, owners of stores, agents, and affiliated milk distribution networks are required to strictly and fully comply with regulations on displaying goods, posting prices, selling at the correct prices... to avoid speculation, hoarding goods, and unreasonable price increases that affect the rights of consumers.
