In 2009, Quan Ho Bac Ninh folk songs were recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

After 15 years, in order to continue to preserve and promote the sustainable value of this heritage in the area, from 44 original quan ho villages, Bac Ninh has developed 150 quan ho practicing villages. This is considered the nucleus, creating the spread of quan ho in the community.

Quan Ho community development

For the past five years, every Saturday and Sunday, more than 50 members of the Quan Ho Village in Thap Duong Hamlet, Trung Kenh Commune, Luong Tai District, Bac Ninh Province - one of 150 Quan Ho villages (also known as the Quan Ho Club in Thap Duong Hamlet) have organized Quan Ho activities.

Lien chi in ao mo ba mo bay, lien anh in ao the and khan turban came to the village cultural house to open their hearts in the space of quan ho culture. For lien anh and lien chi, quan ho is considered a source of emotions, an indispensable spiritual food for them.

While meticulously and skillfully wrapping betel leaves, sharing stories about Quan Ho culture with the members of the Quan Ho village, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc, a member of the Quan Ho Club of Thap Duong village, shared: most of the members are of working age, working during the day, but every weekend evening, they finish their housework early to attend club activities.

During the meetings, each member of the club is assigned different tasks, such as the main singer, the performer, the collector, the popularizer of melodies, the preparer of musical instruments, etc. But everyone is very conscious and responsible, hoping that the club will become stronger and stronger.

“In the past, I did not like listening to Quan Ho because I did not understand Quan Ho culture, but now, being a part of the Club, Quan Ho has become a part of my life. In the Club, the seniors guide the juniors, those who know a lot pass on to those who know less. Therefore, up to now, I can skillfully perform dozens of Quan Ho tunes. In particular, I have a thorough understanding of Quan Ho culture such as lifestyle, how to organize singing sessions, costumes, Quan Ho cuisine , eating habits, speaking, and Quan Ho friendship customs…,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc expressed.

Lien Mr. Cao Van Deu, Chairman of the Quan Ho Club of Thap Duong village, shared: The club was established in 2019. Initially, the Board of Directors went to propagate, mobilize, and gather people who love the village's culture and arts to participate in club activities. Because it is a new club, and not the original Quan Ho village, the club learned to sing through the Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Songs teaching program of Bac Ninh Radio and Television Station.

Gradually, with the “capital” of quan ho, the Lien Anh and Lien Chi learned more difficult melodies with the way of uttering sentences and words, the techniques of resonating, rumbling, and bouncing from famous artists and craftsmen. In particular, in many activities, the club invited quan ho artisans from the original quan ho villages to teach and correct each sentence and each song, especially the ancient melodies. Thanks to that, up to now, the members have not only mastered performing quan ho music but have also begun to sing the songs in response according to the traditional style, and have participated in exchanges and competitions on local and provincial stages.

As for the Quan Ho Club of Thien Duc village, Trung Chinh commune, Luong Tai district, when participating, members not only participate in cultural activities together but also learn how to "play" Quan Ho. Everyone is united like brothers, sharing joys and sorrows, helping each other in daily life.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan, Head of the Quan Ho Club of Thien Duc Village, said: The club was established in 2019, formerly the Thien Duc village art troupe. Although they are of different ages, the members of the club all share a love for Quan Ho folk songs. During activities, experienced members teach and correct each word for new members, so that Quan Ho folk songs can be continuously spread.

Ms. Loan shared: To cultivate and improve singing skills, the club regularly organizes exchanges with the original Quan Ho village clubs in the province, or invites Quan Ho artists and artisans to teach and instruct each singing technique and style of Quan Ho people. With its tireless efforts, the Club is recognized as a Quan Ho practice club.

Recently, at the First Provincial Festival of Typical Quan Ho Villages in 2024, the Club was honored to win the A prize. The Organizing Committee assessed that the performance had high artistic quality, creating a deep impression and emotion for the audience. The harmonious coordination between singing, acting, and music , brought out the quintessence of Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Songs.

To let Quan Ho survive and spread

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Bac Ninh province Nguyen Xuan Trung, reality shows that Quan Ho villages are interested in, encouraged and motivated by Party committees at all levels, authorities, departments, branches and organizations, creating favorable conditions for training facilities, creating places for performances on holidays, Tet, village festivals, organizing annual Quan Ho performances, creating useful playgrounds for clubs.

Up to now, most of the quan ho practice clubs in the province have been operating in a disciplined manner, building regulations, establishing a Board of Directors and attracting brothers and sisters of all ages to participate in activities. In particular, not only stopping at performing on stage, the form of singing and responding, quan ho customs have been of interest to the clubs.

From 44 original quan ho villages, up to now, Bac Ninh has developed 150 quan ho practicing villages, nearly 600 quan ho folk song clubs with thousands of people of all ages participating.

In addition to practicing Quan Ho singing, the clubs also organize classes to teach the young generation in the locality; send members to participate in Quan Ho singing competitions in early spring and Quan Ho stage competitions organized by the province... That has vividly demonstrated the strong vitality of Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk songs after 15 years of being recognized as a representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This is the result of a persistent and correct conservation process, an effort of the entire political system with the dedication and responsible contribution of many individuals and the Quan Ho community. In particular, since 2019, Bac Ninh province has implemented a mechanism to support funding for Quan Ho villages and clubs. Specifically, the province supports 30 million VND/village/year for 44 original Quan Ho villages; 20 million VND/village/year for 150 practicing Quan Ho villages; 20 million VND/club/time for Quan Ho clubs outside Bac Ninh province when provincial leaders visit.

The above support aims to encourage and motivate Quan Ho villages and Quan Ho folk song clubs to continue to actively contribute to the preservation and promotion of the value of Bac Ninh Quan Ho folk songs. The above support source creates conditions for Quan Ho clubs and villages to have funds for activities of preserving and teaching Quan Ho.

It can be seen that Quan Ho practice clubs are increasingly playing an active role in cultural and artistic exchange activities, especially participating in festivals, competitions and performances. Promoting the development of Quan Ho practice clubs not only contributes to preserving and promoting the value of Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Heritage but also motivates the movement to build cultural life in localities, affirming the commitment to UNESCO that Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Songs are enduring and spreading./.
