On May 23, the new Chinese Ambassador to the US, Xie Feng (pictured), arrived in the US to take up his duties amid a situation where US-China relations still show no signs of "thawing".
Speaking to reporters after arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, Ambassador Ta Phong said he would strive to strengthen US-China relations despite acknowledging that the relationship is currently facing “many difficulties and serious challenges.”
Mr. Xie Feng (59 years old) will take over the position of Chinese Ambassador to the US, replacing Mr. Qin Gang - who was appointed as Chinese Foreign Minister since the end of last year. Mr. Xie Feng used to be China's Deputy Foreign Minister in charge of US policy. He is known for his outspoken comments on the bilateral relationship between Beijing and Washington, in the context of the relationship between the two powers deteriorating in many aspects.
Meanwhile, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller welcomed the new Chinese Ambassador to the US. Mr. Miller shared: “We look forward to working with Ambassador Xie Feng and his team. As we have said on a number of previous occasions, we remain committed to maintaining open channels of communication with China to manage our competitive relationship responsibly.”
Bonnie Glaser, an expert at the German Marshall Fund, said that the US-China relationship has been quite tense recently and that Mr. Xie Feng, as an experienced diplomat familiar with US policymakers, would be able to better connect the two powers. According to Mr. Glaser, the appointment of Mr. Xie Feng as China's ambassador to the US is part of Beijing's efforts to prevent the bilateral relationship with the US from deteriorating further.
