Around 4 a.m., a team of nearly 20 shrimp harvesters began their work, each carrying a headlamp to catch shrimp before dawn.

To summarize, these blue-clawed prawns are quite simple.

The work lasted for several hours, until dawn broke and the sun came out.

Shrimp here are raised using extensive farming methods, in harmony with nature, with species such as whiteleg shrimp, tiger shrimp, and freshwater prawn. Shrimp can be harvested after 3-5 months of farming, yielding significantly higher profits than rice cultivation.

Each participant in the shrimp catching activity is paid approximately 300,000 VND for each harvest.

Upon arrival at the collection point, the shrimp are washed, sorted, weighed, and sent for sale. Grade 1 shrimp are purchased at 145,000 VND/kg. Costs are low because the shrimp feed mainly on natural food sources, resulting in an average profit of 10-15 million VND/ha for the farmers, 2-3 times higher than rice cultivation.

Many households raise shrimp, so they don't grow rice during the summer-autumn or autumn-winter seasons, only cultivating one winter-spring crop during the dry season. Shrimp farming also reduces costs for land preparation, fertilizer, and pesticides in the subsequent rice crop.

Many households raise shrimp, so they don't grow rice during the summer-autumn or autumn-winter seasons, only cultivating one crop during the winter-spring season. Shrimp farming also reduces costs for land preparation, fertilizer, and pesticides in the subsequent rice crop. In the coming days, these shrimp ponds will become winter-spring rice fields. More than three months later, after harvesting the rice, the farmers will introduce saltwater to "treat" the rice stubble... then monitor the salinity level to start a new shrimp crop.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Luong Nghia commune, said that instead of just producing low-yield rice, the extensive shrimp-rice farming model, adapted to natural conditions, has brought better income to farmers. Currently, about 170 households in the commune participate in the model with an area of nearly 160 hectares, an increase of nearly 50 hectares compared to the previous year. The model is helping people change their lives, produce organically, and adapt effectively to climate change. In the future, the local authorities will continue to encourage people to expand the model.
