Strengthening forest fire prevention and fighting during peak season

The prolonged hot weather poses a high risk of forest fires in the city. In this situation, the forestry sector, along with specialized units and local authorities, have implemented many inspection and monitoring measures and proactively implemented prevention plans, readying forces to respond when incidents occur.

Son Tra Peninsula is considered the “green lung” of Son Tra district in particular and Da Nang city in general. With such an important role, in recent times, the work of forest protection and development, especially forest fire prevention and fighting, has always received special attention from authorities at all levels and functional forces.

According to the Son Tra - Ngu Hanh Son Inter-District Forest Protection Department, there are two core forces in the district responsible for forest protection, including: an interdisciplinary patrol team consisting of forest rangers, police, the Son Tra Peninsula Management Board and Da Nang tourist beaches, and local authorities; a rapid response team established by the Forest Protection Department. In addition, the Inter-District Forest Protection Department is managing 6/8 forest environmental service groups with a total of 46 members. This force regularly coordinates patrols and combat with the rapid response team to promptly detect and handle forest fire incidents, especially during the peak hot season.

Mr. Ngo Truong Chinh, Head of the Son Tra - Ngu Hanh Son Inter-District Forest Protection Department, said that since the beginning of the year, there have been no fires in the district. The unit has proactively cleared roads, focused on maintaining and repairing fire prevention and fighting works and equipment. Since March, the department has carried out mobile propaganda on forest fire prevention and fighting in residential areas and on roads with high tourist concentrations. At the same time, it requires residents and tourists visiting the Son Tra peninsula not to camp or use fire to grill food in some areas of the peninsula.

“Preserving this place cannot rely solely on the authorities, but requires the consensus of every resident and tourist. Every conscious action of the residents today is the way for us to preserve Son Tra for the future,” Mr. Chinh shared.

Not only Son Tra Peninsula, Ba Na - Nui Chua Nature Reserve also plays an important role in protecting natural resources, forest ecosystems and biodiversity in Da Nang. With a total area of forest and forestry land of more than 26,758 hectares, this is home to many rare species of animals and plants, indigenous genetic resources and valuable medicinal plants. Identifying forest management, protection and forest fire prevention and fighting as key tasks, Ba Na - Nui Chua Special-Use Forest Management Board proactively and synchronously deploys many solutions in the managed forest area.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tan, Director of the Management Board, the unit has zoned off key areas at high risk of fire, especially those bordering protective forests and production forests. Along with that, patrolling and inspection work has been strengthened, ensuring that forces, vehicles and equipment for fire prevention are always ready. Forest fire prevention and fighting teams regularly monitor the area, grasp information quickly and promptly. Propaganda and awareness raising for communities living near forests have also been implemented in many flexible forms. In addition, plans for handling situations when fires occur have also been specifically developed, close to the actual terrain.

It is expected that on May 22, the Management Board will organize a practice of forest fire prevention and fighting plans in Ba Na - Nui Chua Nature Reserve in 2025. This is an annual activity of high practicality, aiming to raise awareness and responsibility in forest fire prevention and fighting; as a basis for assessing the leadership, command, management and fire fighting organization capacity of on-site forces; checking the readiness and effectiveness of using existing fire fighting equipment, means and tools; at the same time, enhancing coordination between functional forces when large-scale forest fires occur. The implementation of the "4 on-site" motto continues to be considered a core solution to respond promptly and minimize damage if a fire occurs in the protected forest area.
