*On October 30, the US Department of Agriculture confirmed that a pig on a farm in Oregon state had contracted H5N1 avian influenza, marking the first time the country recorded an epidemic in pigs.
The spread of avian influenza viruses in pigs is of particular concern because they can be co-infected with bird and human strains, potentially swapping genes to form a new, more dangerous strain that is more easily transmitted to humans.
The USDA said that the US pork supply is currently not affected by the case of avian influenza in pigs in Oregon and the risk of spreading to the community remains low.
The Oregon swine farm where the bird flu was reported has been quarantined, and other animals there, including sheep and goats, are being monitored for the disease, according to the USDA. All pigs and poultry on the farm have been euthanized to prevent the spread of the virus and allow for additional testing of pigs on other farms, the agency said.
