The Ministry of Education and Training said that the total number of candidates registered to take the national excellent student exam for the 2023-2024 school year is 5,819 candidates, an increase of 1,230 candidates compared to the 2022-2023 school year.
Of the total 12 subjects of this exam, literature and English are the subjects with the most candidates, with 648 and 639 candidates respectively. The exam will have 68 examination boards with a total of 403 exam rooms.
The exam content is included in the 2006 High SchoolEducation Program and instructions for implementing the specialized program of high school subjects according to Official Dispatch No. 10803/BGDĐT-GDTrH dated December 16, 2009 of the Ministry of Education and Training.
The exam has many new points.
This year is the first year that the national excellent student exam is conducted according to the new regulations. Specifically, on October 10, 2023, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Circular No. 17/2023/TT-BGDDT on the Regulations on the National Excellent Student Exam (replacing Circular No. 56/2011/TT-BGDDT) with many new points. In particular, the regulations stipulate that the maximum number of candidates for each subject of each unit is 10 candidates, and 20 candidates for Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
This regulation also stipulates that instead of organizing practical exams in the national excellent student selection exam, the exam questions for physics, chemistry, and biology will have content that requires candidates to solve using knowledge related to experimental and practical skills.
The new regulations also increase the percentage of candidates winning prizes in the national excellent student selection exam, ensuring compliance with the regulations of regional and international Olympics. Accordingly, 60% of candidates will win consolation prizes or higher (previous years were 50%); in which, the total number of first, second, and third prizes will not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes, the number of first prizes will not exceed 5% of the total number of prizes.
Notably, the new regulations have added provisions on granting certificates of participation in the national high school excellent student selection exam for candidates who take the exam but do not win any prizes. This, according to the Ministry of Education and Training, is to help students have long-term personal information about their participation in the exam.
According to Circular 17, every year, the Ministry of Education and Training organizes two national competitions to select excellent students, including: the national high school competition to select excellent students and the competition to select high school students for national teams to participate in international and regional Olympic competitions.
The Ministry of Education and Training believes that organizing national competitions to select excellent students aims to motivate and encourage teachers and students to promote their creativity, teach well, and study well; contribute to promoting the improvement and enhancement of teaching and learning quality, the quality of management and direction of educational management levels; at the same time, discover students with aptitude for subjects to create a source of training, and realize the goal of training talented people.
