Girl D.TNT (12 years old, Hau Giang province), was admitted to the emergency room on June 2, 2023 with a nearly severed right earlobe and complex contusions. The wound bled profusely, the edges were jagged, the ear cartilage was lost and exposed, and there was a lot of dirt and sand, which could cause infection.
Dr. Huy Thanh, Deputy Director of Can Tho Children's Hospital, said that as soon as the patient was admitted, the on-duty team examined, evaluated and temporarily stopped the bleeding from the wound. The girl was assigned to have surgery to reconstruct her right ear to ensure the aesthetics and sound wave reception function of the ear.
The surgical team had to thoroughly clean the dirt stuck to the wound, cut away the crushed cartilage and jagged tissue to reconstruct and reshape the child's ear. Doctors said that ear reconstruction is a complex and difficult surgery, as well as a great challenge for ENT doctors. Because the ear has a very special histological structure, a very thin layer of skin covers the cartilage frame, with a concave and convex shape in the middle. Deformed ear after an accident will affect the reception of sound and hinder the communication process.
Currently, the girl is being monitored. The wound on her earlobe is pink and has healed after the stitches were removed, and the structure of the earlobe has returned to almost its original state.
