Heavy damage
In the summer-autumn crop of 2024, Mr. Nong Van Khiem - a member of the Nhu Co Youth Cooperative (Cho Moi district) planted and cared for 2,300 melon plants in a greenhouse with an area of 1,000 m2 .
Mr. Khiem shared that with the calculation of the harvest season at the end of September - the time when other melon gardens in the province are still young, the melon gardens are carefully cared for, the plants grow well, the summer-autumn crop will be very favorable. However, with only 20 days left to count down the trees to harvest sweet fruit, the impact of the circulation of storm No. 3, heavy rain with whirlwinds on September 9-10 caused the greenhouse roof to be blown off, and the flood water of the Cau River rose, causing the entire melon garden to be submerged in floodwaters, mud, and garbage brought with the flood. He thought he would have a bumper melon crop, but now the damage is severe. If each previous crop, the melon garden brought in 90-100 million VND, this season he only hopes to salvage some of the money for seeds and fertilizers.
Mr. Nong Van Khiem shares about the damage to his melon garden due to storms and floods.
Lung Quang village, Quang Khe commune (Ba Be district) has 8 hectares of rice submerged in water, only more than 1 hectare can be restored after the water recedes, the rest is completely lost. Mr. Duong Van Huu - Head of Lung Quang village shared that the village has 32 households, up to this point there are 8 poor households but many households have lost all their crops, assets and livestock due to the flood, so the number of poor households will probably increase this year; many families still face many difficulties in repairing their housing and restoring production.
Storm No. 3 is the strongest storm to make landfall in our country in the past 30 years. The storm's circulation caused very heavy rain, lasting for many days over a wide area in all localities in the province. Heavy rain caused the biggest flood since 1990 on Cau River, Nang River and small rivers; landslides in many localities; localized flooding in some low-lying areas such as Nam Mau and Khang Ninh communes (Ba Be), Yen Lac town (Na Ri), Dong Tam town and Nhu Co commune (Cho Moi)...
Due to the impact of storm No. 3, over 2,200 hectares of agricultural, forestry and fishery production in Bac Kan province were damaged, of which about 1,500 hectares of rice, corn and other crops were damaged by over 70%; 55 barns were damaged; nearly 7,600 livestock died; many irrigation works were damaged, greatly affecting the province's agricultural production.
Restore production
Mr. Nong Van Khiem - member of Nhu Co Youth Cooperative visits and cleans each melon. prepare for harvest day |
According to Mr. Nong Van Khiem - a member of the Nhu Co Youth Cooperative, as soon as the greenhouse roof was blown off, the members of the Cooperative helped him temporarily fix it by reusing the pieces that were not damaged. When the water receded, he and his family spent more than 10 days cleaning up the trash in the garden, trimming the leaves of the melons that were stuck to the mud and could not be washed off, and the damaged fruits, checking along the melon rows to drain the stagnant water to avoid the plants from getting waterlogged; actively taking care of them, extending the harvest time compared to the expected time. During these days of preparing for harvest, every day, Mr. Khiem went out to visit the garden, wiping each melon that was stuck to the soil.
At Ban Chang field, My Thanh commune (Bach Thong), Mr. Hoang Thanh Vui's family had 1,800 m2 of rice damaged by rocks and sand that were carried by floodwaters while they were in the stage of receiving rice panicles. Mr. Vui said that after the flood, his family went to the field together to rebuild the fallen rice clumps; as for the areas that were completely buried and could not be restored, in the coming time, his family will restore them by clearing all the rocks and sand in the field, and adding more fertile soil before cultivating the next crops.
To restore production after the storm, the Department of Agriculture has instructed people to apply a number of measures to handle, overcome and recover after storms. Accordingly, for the main crop rice, all resources should be focused on pumping and draining to prevent prolonged flooding and damage; for early crop rice, after draining the water in the field, farmers should prop up the rice by gathering 3-4 rice stalks together to make the plants stand upright to create favorable conditions for the rice to become firm and ripe. For the crop area that cannot be restored, urgently clean the fields, flexibly apply soil preparation and planting methods to expand the area of warm-loving winter crops to compensate for the area and output of the 2024 crop crop that will be short due to storms.
For livestock, the organization strictly implements general cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization immediately after the end of the rain and flood to destroy pathogens in the environment. Review and organize the second round of vaccinations in 2024 for livestock according to regulations, especially for livestock and poultry in areas where epidemics have just occurred, are at high risk, and have been flooded...
These days, although the flood water has receded, people in flood-affected areas in localities are still facing many difficulties in overcoming the consequences and rebuilding production. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is directing its affiliated units to proactively coordinate with the People's Committees of districts and cities to urgently restore production; at the same time, advising the Provincial People's Committee to propose the Central Government to support plants and breeds to help people restore production as soon as possible./.
