The search for 11 Indonesian sailors missing after their ship caught fire in the Indian Ocean began on May 19, Jakarta search and rescue agency chief Fazzli A said.

The fire broke out on the KM Serba Prima 8 on May 16, but it was not until May 19 that Indonesian rescuers discovered the incident after two crew members of the ship were rescued by another ship and brought to a seaport in Cilacap city, Central Java province.

“We have deployed personnel to the scene and are coordinating with rescue agencies in areas where victims may be found. We have also coordinated with the Australian Joint Rescue Coordination Centre,” said Mr Fazzli A.

According to him, the fire broke out when all the sailors were sleeping, so after waking up, they were unable to put out the fire which had spread too far.

All the sailors jumped into the sea and two of them were rescued by a ship.

Earlier, an Indonesian rescue worker said local authorities reported three people missing after an oil tanker caught fire off the coast of the country's West Nusa Tenggara province on March 26.

The head of the West Nusa Tenggara provincial search and rescue agency confirmed that the ship was owned by state oil company PT Pertamina.

The fire broke out right in the offshore area of the company's oil storage facility in Mataram city, West Nusa Tenggara province.

Authorities received a fire report at 3:40 p.m. local time the same day. There were 17 people on board at the time of the incident. 14 of them were rescued, while the remaining 3 are still missing./.
