Receiving a wildcard into the tournament on home soil, Mboko has created an unbelievable journey by defeating four former Grand Slam champions.
They include top seeds Coco Gauff (No. 1) and Elena Rybakina (No. 3), along with Sofia Kenin and Naomi Osaka. It is the first time since the legendary Serena Williams in 1999 that a teenager has achieved this feat.
Starting 2025 at world number 333, this historic title will see Mboko jump to number 34 in the WTA rankings.
She also became the third home player in the open era to win the Canadian Open, after Faye Urban (1969) and Bianca Andreescu (2019).
In the final, Mboko showed great character. She successfully took advantage of 8 out of 9 break-point opportunities to win after three tight sets.
A total of 13 breaks of serve were recorded in the 25 games of the match. The victory also made Mboko only the third wild card in history to win a WTA 1000 tournament.
"I've always admired Naomi since I was a kid. So it's special to be up against her," Mboko said emotionally at the awards ceremony.
Born to Congolese parents, the 18-year-old has had a breakout 2025, winning 51 of 59 matches at all levels. She had a 22-match winning streak to start the season and won four ITF titles.
The Canadian Open title is Mboko's first WTA Tour title and will be the perfect stepping stone for further development in the future.
