According to Hollywood Reporter , Taylor Swift is facing a trademark infringement lawsuit. The plaintiff is Maren Wade, the stage name of dancer Maren Flagg, who used to perform in Las Vegas.

In the lawsuit, Maren Wade alleges that Taylor Swift's use of the album title , The Life of a Showgirl, threatens to "overshadow" the long-standing Confessions of a Showgirl brand that she has built over the past 12 years.

Taylor Swift is in trouble.

The lawsuit, filed on March 30, names four individuals: Taylor Swift, TAS Rights Management, UMG Recordings, and UMG's merchandise producer, Bravado International Group Merchandising Services.

Maren Wade alleges the defendants trademark infringement, misrepresentation of origin, and unfair competition. She is asking the court to issue an injunction prohibiting Taylor Swift from using the phrase "The Life of a Showgirl," and to compensate her for lost profits, attorney fees, and other damages.

Maren Wade's brand originated from a column in Las Vegas Weekly in 2014, which later evolved into a touring stage show, podcast, and live performances.

The program's content is described as "a candid and humorous sharing of the difficulties and absurdities of the performing arts."

Maren Wade registered the trademark " Confessions of a Showgirl" in 2015.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift released her album The Life of a Showgirl in October 2025. The album set sales records with 4 million album units in its first week in the US and 5.5 million worldwide.

Maren Wade alleges that Taylor Swift's use of the brand on merchandise, including candles, clothing, and consumer goods, "overshadows" her own brand, potentially leading consumers to mistakenly believe that her show is a copy of the singer.

According to the lawsuit, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) previously rejected Taylor Swift's trademark application for "The Life of a Showgirl" due to potential confusion with the Maren Wade trademark. The singer's application was also temporarily suspended due to a conflict with another trademark related to perfume.

"We have great respect for Taylor Swift's talent and success, but trademark law exists to protect what creators have built. That is the purpose of this lawsuit," Maren Wade's lawyer told Reuters.

According to TMZ , Maren Wade's social media accounts have posted numerous messages supporting Taylor Swift, using her music and related hashtags.

Trademark lawyer Josh Gerben commented that the lawsuit has a reasonable legal basis, but the chances of winning in court are probably around 50% because similar disputes are often settled before going to court due to cost and complexity.
