In recent years, the functional food market has witnessed the emergence of a controversial product: Alipas Ginseng, imported from the US by Eco Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company. However, it is worth noting that there are still many conflicting opinions about whether this product can really be considered a type of ginseng.
According to advertising information on the websites alipasplatinum.com.vn and ecopharma.com.vn, Alipas Ginseng is described as a "new invention" by American scientists , combining Eurycoma Longifolia essence and specific herbs for men. The Platinum formula promises to help increase the production of Luteinizing hormone, thereby promoting the production of natural Testosterone. This is said to increase physiological ability and overall health for men.
Notably, Alipas Ginseng is produced by St-Paul Brands, USA. However, few people know that Eurycoma Longifolia, also known as the ginseng plant, is a familiar plant to Vietnamese people. Its other name is the panacea plant, and its scientific name is Eurycoma longifolia. This plant is used in traditional medicine and is also known by names such as "tongkat ali" in Malay or "longjack" in English.
Pharmacist Dao Kim Long, an expert in the industry, expressed surprise when he saw this product called “Alipas Ginseng”. He said that the Euryale plant cannot be considered ginseng, because in the global classification there are only 21 types of ginseng, and Euryale is not among them. An important point to determine the difference between ginseng and other herbs is the presence of saponin. Meanwhile, Euryale does not have this substance, and the list of ingredients of Alipas Ginseng does not mention saponin.
Pharmacist Long also emphasized that the arbitrary use of the word "ginseng" is becoming a common problem in Vietnam, leading to confusion in promoting products such as "Artificial Ngoc Linh Ginseng".
Contrary to the doubts of Pharmacist Long, the Food Safety Department has officially responded to this issue. In a document signed by Deputy Director Do Huu Tuan, the Department said that it had issued a certificate for the product Alipas Platinum with the brand name “MEN'S GINSENG” since 2014, and this product has been approved for circulation by US authorities. However, the composition does not contain the element “ginseng”.
The Food and Drug Administration also confirmed that the plant belongs to the family of ginseng, and the brand name “MEN'S GINSENG” is an accepted brand name in the United States.
In addition to Alipas Ginseng for men, Eco Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company also distributes Angela Gold Ginseng for women, also imported from the US. Thereby, the story of Alipas Ginseng is not simply a product, but also a debate about how to understand and use the term "ginseng" in the functional food industry in Vietnam.
