On the afternoon of August 23, the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh province issued a report on the fact that the exam scores of candidates in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year of this province were continuously changed after the inspection process.

Press conference on wrong exam scores in Thai Binh.

Previously, the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh received information from Ms. Lu Thi Diep, the parent of candidate LKA, about her child's test scores changing significantly, each time with a different score.

In the first announcement of results, Ms. Diep said that LKA achieved a total score of 29.7 points. Of which, the Literature score was 7.25, Math 4.5 and English 4.2. With this result, LKA was admitted to Chu Van An High School (the standard score at the time of admission was 28.2 points).

At 9:02 a.m. on August 20, when looking up the scores after the inspection results were available, this candidate's Math score increased by 1 point to 5.5 points, while the scores for the other two subjects remained unchanged. With the new scores, LKA is still eligible for admission.

However, when checking the scores again at 9am the next day (August 21), Ms. Diep's family was shocked when LKA's Math score showed a 0.5 point drop. A 4 point drop meant that this candidate would fail the public high school entrance exam.

At that time, the family filed a petition for review and requested the Thai Binh Department of Education and Training to clarify this issue.

After receiving the information, the Department of Education and Training held a meeting at 3:00 p.m. on August 23 with individuals and units related to the department's leaders, representatives of the provincial police and representatives of Viettel Thai Binh, representatives of the Board of Directors of Hoang Dieu Secondary School and parents of Lu Thi Diep.

At the meeting, parents presented that LKA students' Math scores changed when looking up at different times on the system and provided screenshots at different times of looking up.

According to the report of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh, a representative of Viettel Thai Binh opened the search history (log) on the Thai Binh Provincial Primary School Admission System under the witness of the members attending the meeting.

The results show that candidate LKA has looked up his exam scores more than 20 times, all times looking up Math is 0.5 points. Viettel Thai Binh representative provided the above information along with detailed lookup history, including one lookup at 9:02 am, coinciding with the time provided by the family.

Thus, the exact Math score of LKA candidate displayed on the system is 0.5 points.

This year's Thai Binh public 10th grade entrance exam took place in early June. After the scores were announced, more than 800 candidates submitted applications to appeal their exam scores.

The review results showed that many candidates (mainly candidates taking the entrance exam to Thai Binh Specialized High School and Nguyen Duc Canh High School) had their initial announced scores for Literature and Math at only 2-4 points, but after the review, they increased to 8-9.5 points.

There was a case where a candidate's math exam score for grade 10 was announced to be only 3.75 points, but the re-examination result increased it to 9.5 points (a difference of 5.75 points).

Suspecting something unusual, many parents whose children took the 10th grade entrance exam in Thai Binh province sent a complaint to Mr. Nguyen Viet Hien, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh province, and a number of related people.

Through the investigation, the Inspectorate of Thai Binh province concluded that the total number of essay exams with incorrect scores was 2,769 exams, 1,589 candidates had incorrect total admission scores. 252 candidates went from failing to passing, of which 15 candidates passed Thai Binh Specialized High School. On the contrary, 15 candidates were also eliminated from the list of candidates admitted to specialized schools, 243 candidates from the general high school examination council went from passing to failing their first choice.

The provincial inspectorate will continue to verify and clarify the responsibilities of organizations and individuals in the process of performing tasks at all stages leading to the deviation, incorrect scores of candidates, and incorrect admission results. "It is estimated that there will be dozens of people involved, who will be investigated, verified, clarified and strictly handled by the authorities according to the provisions of law," said a representative of the provincial inspectorate.
