Liverpool's trophy parade tragedy

Liverpool's joy of being crowned Premier League champions in the 2024/25 season was overshadowed by a horrific accident that left many people injured.

The incident happened at around 6pm (local time) on Water Street, Liverpool city centre, when thousands of fans gathered to celebrate the "Red Brigade's 20th national championship title".

The car involved in the accident, described as “running straight into the crowd”, left at least four people hospitalized on stretchers and many others injured. Witnesses said the grey car appeared suddenly from the right, turned left and then drove onto the sidewalk, hitting several people, including women and children. One witness even described the horrifying sound of people being thrown over the hood as the car accelerated.

The driver, a 53-year-old white man from the Liverpool area, was arrested at the scene. Merseyside Police, working with the North West Counter Terrorism Unit, quickly cordoned off the scene, erected a tent to protect evidence and provide support to victims.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper were briefed on the incident. Starmer expressed his shock at the tragedy, offered his condolences to the victims and pledged his full support to the investigation.

On social media, many celebrities such as former players Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler expressed their grief and wished for the safety of all involved. Liverpool FC also issued a statement of condolences, affirming that they will cooperate closely with the authorities to clarify the incident.
