Take a virtual museum tour.

Visiting a museum from the comfort of your home? This may sound absurd, but it's true. Using the most immersive virtual reality technology available today, the Ninh Binh Museum allows visitors and locals to explore its exhibits and learn about historical artifacts through the application of digital technology in heritage management and protection.

Joining a group of tourists from Kim Son district on a visit to the Ninh Binh Museum, we experienced historical artifacts in a unique way for the first time. Following the mouse clicks of a Ninh Binh Museum staff member, we were able to take a virtual tour of the museum's exhibition rooms from our office. Using virtual reality technology, guided by arrows on the screen, we traveled from the main hall to the second floor, showcasing the sovereignty stone of the Truong Sa Islands; Ninh Binh during the resistance against the US; Ninh Binh during the resistance against the French; and then to the third floor, displaying the natural conditions and environment of Ninh Binh province, and the Hoa Lu capital in the 10th century.

In each exhibition area, with a single click, viewers can pause at any exhibit to examine it closely, learn more about it, and then move on to other areas. Accompanying this "tour" is a recorded and pre-recorded voice commentary from the museum's tour guide.

Mr. Tran Van Kinh (Phat Diem town, Kim Son district) shared: "Knowing about the application of modern digital technology like this, I will tell my friends and grandchildren about it so that if they need to find out any information, they can access it from home with just a click of the mouse..."

In a conversation with Ms. Le Thi Minh Trang from the Exhibition and Propaganda Department of the Ninh Binh Museum, we learned that the Ninh Binh Museum's website was developed in 2022 as part of the province's digital transformation program. Since then, the number of visits has steadily increased, attracting many followers. To ensure the website's effectiveness, museum staff actively search for information and update images of activities so that readers can see the museum's innovations. Simultaneously, there is coordination with various departments to provide the most accurate information about exhibits. Museum staff also collaborate and research content from other sectors to provide the most up-to-date information.

Not only can visitors find information about the museum's activities on the website, but by accessing the VRTOUR360 feature, they can experience and learn more about the exhibits using the most vivid virtual reality technology available today, especially those utilizing 3D technology.

The VRTOUR360 interface will "guide" visitors on a tour of the museum.

Comrade Nguyen Xuan Khang, Director of Ninh Binh Museum, added: In recent years, digital transformation activities at Ninh Binh Museum have been implemented effectively, contributing to the management and promotion of the value of artifacts preserved at the Museum, as well as serving the needs of people and tourists in a modern and convenient way.

To showcase the value of the heritage, visitors can explore the museum's website via the VRTOUR360 feature using a computer or phone. By accessing this feature, visitors can easily learn about the museum's information, images, and artifacts through vivid and engaging visuals with comprehensive information.

Furthermore, digital transformation also helps to make the preservation, management, arrangement, and display of documents and artifacts more scientific, reducing the time and effort required for searching. Through digital transformation, collected documents and artifacts have been digitized, effectively serving researchers at the local and central levels in quickly and scientifically accessing information and images of documents and artifacts.

From a management perspective, digital transformation helps museum staff effectively carry out six key tasks: research, collection, inventory, preservation, display, and promotion of heritage values in a scientific, timely, and efficient manner. Furthermore, the preservation of the original values of artifacts is carried out scientifically, allowing for the understanding of the condition of the documents and artifacts at the time of their collection.

In particular, digital transformation has also had a significant impact on community enjoyment. When visitors come to the museum in person, they no longer need to use the live audio guide system; they can simply scan the QR code attached to the exhibits to learn more about them. If they are unable to visit in person, visitors can learn more through the VRTOUR360 feature on the Ninh Binh Museum's website.

In 2023, the Museum welcomed and guided 19,703 visitors and students, including 234 international visitors. Many visitors effectively utilized digital technology to explore the Museum through QR codes attached to various areas and exhibits, or by using screens in the exhibition halls.

To better serve the needs of locals and tourists, in the coming time, Ninh Binh Museum will invest human resources and intellectual capital to strengthen and develop its website, add more images and documents of newly collected artifacts, enrich the digitized collection, and regularly update the museum's activities... in order to increase its attractiveness to visitors and contribute to the preservation and promotion of heritage values.
