Young man has skin lesions, whole body oozing pus due to applying ant bark

The patient’s family said that, following a tip from relatives, the patient applied the three-compartment ant on his body to treat the itch. Afterwards, the skin lesions appeared as ulcers and spread more and more.

On March 25, the Central Dermatology Hospital informed that the hospital's doctors received a 25-year-old male patient (in Hung Yen ) with skin lesions all over his body, many ulcers caused by applying ants to his body to treat itching.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with skin lesions in many areas of the body, with wet discharge in the genital area, legs, arms and buttocks.

Taking the patient’s medical history, the male patient’s mother said that the patient had been itching for a long time. The family picked leaves such as star fruit, Indian almond, etc. to boil water for bathing but it did not help. A week ago, relatives told them that the family had found and caught three-cavity ants, and gave them to make a medicine in liquid form to rub on the itchy area.

The patient said that after applying the solution for a day, he felt a burning sensation on his skin, fatigue, and loss of strength. He thought it was a side effect of the solution. After that, he still tried to endure it. Only when the skin lesions spread, forming ulcerated patches and oozing fluid did he go to the hospital for examination. At the hospital, doctors from the Department of Men's Skin Diseases diagnosed the patient with scabies and irritant contact dermatitis.

Dr. Quach Thi Ha Giang - Head of the Department of Treatment of Men's Skin Diseases said that doctors apply comprehensive treatment measures, including local treatment and care of skin lesions with antibacterial and antibiotic solutions, and systemic treatment with antibiotics, pain relievers, and anti-inflammatory drugs. The doctor hopes that within the next 1-2 weeks, the patient's condition will improve significantly, the pain will be reduced and the skin can heal.

Dr. Giang added that this patient initially had some symptoms such as itching, blisters, red spots in the groin area, due to scabies and skin fungus. If the patient had come to see a doctor earlier, the condition would not have been so severe. However, due to not coming to see a doctor and receiving proper treatment, the patient arbitrarily used some folk methods, causing serious damage to the skin. Applying the substance from the three-cavity ant to a large area of skin led to skin necrosis, redness, burning, and even bleeding in the genital area and buttocks. This is a serious consequence of improper treatment, which can cause localized infections and spread throughout the body.

Therefore, Dr. Giang recommends that people should go to specialized medical facilities for examination and proper treatment when they have any unusual signs on their skin. Believing in unorthodox, unproven treatment methods will make the condition worse, affecting the health and quality of life of the patient./.
