Ho Chi Minh City standardizes medical stations into "miniature hospitals"

Ho Chi Minh City standardizes at least 125 medical stations to become "mini hospitals," serving primary medical examination and treatment, classifying treatment and managing community health, reducing the burden on upper-level facilities.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health is developing a plan to advise the City People's Committee to upgrade the system of commune and ward health stations in the area to become "mini hospitals," where initial medical examination and treatment, periodic health monitoring, and treatment classification are provided before referral.

According to Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, after the merger, the city has 168 commune and ward health stations and 298 stations.

According to the Ministry of Health 's guidance, the City will standardize at least 125 medical stations with an area of over 500 m2, fully invested in departments, rooms, and necessary medical equipment to meet the primary health care needs of the people.

The leaders of the City Health Department stated that health stations are the closest places to the people, the places that people trust the most, and must become the “gateway” in community health care. People will be examined, classified and initially treated at the grassroots level, and only transferred to higher levels when absolutely necessary.

After the merger, Ho Chi Minh City's population increased from over 9.9 million to 13.7 million; the number of hospitals increased from 134 to 164. However, the hospital bed ratio decreased from 42 beds/10,000 people to 35 beds/10,000 people. This is a big challenge in ensuring quality healthcare services for the people.

Faced with this situation, the City Health Department will increase technology transfer and support human resources for grassroots health care; in the immediate future, it will provide comprehensive support to the Con Dao Special Zone Medical Center.

At the same time, the City will rename district hospitals according to the new administrative units after the merger; review and develop a plan to improve professional capacity for all hospitals in the area.

In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health will expand the health check-up program for the elderly and students, and promote the digital conversion of periodic health check-up data to create a national health record./.Dinh Hang
