"Vietnam is the 6th largest country in terms of the number of students studying in the US with nearly 30,000 students. This strong exchange of knowledge and culture is a testament to the close ties between the two countries," said a representative of the US Embassy in Vietnam.
Nearly 30,000 Vietnamese students study in the US
Sharing about the situation of studying in the US as well as the opportunities for Vietnamese students to access American education at the educational cooperation signing ceremony between the National Economics University, Boise State University and Andrews University held on the afternoon of December 6, Mr. Konstantin Dubrovsky, Deputy Economic Advisor, US Embassy in Vietnam said: "Currently, Vietnam is the 6th country in terms of the number of students studying in the US, with nearly 30,000 Vietnamese students studying at US educational institutions and 300,000 other students accessing US educational resources online. This strong exchange of knowledge and culture is a testament to the close relationships between the two countries.
In 2025, we celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam. This is a good time to look back at the remarkable journey we have traveled together and envision the future of our partnership, where educational cooperation plays a key role."

Mr. Konstantin Dubrovsky also emphasized: "The US Embassy is committed to creating an environment where partnerships between US and Vietnamese universities can thrive. Our commitment to promotingeducational relationships is evident through initiatives such as the Education USA STEM Champions for Vietnam program. This program aims to build partnerships between US and Vietnamese higher education institutions, promoting exchanges between faculty, students and administrators from both countries.
In November last year, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Education and Training with the Ministry of Education and Training, which highlights joint cooperation in scholarship programmes, higher education partnerships and student and faculty exchange programmes. This is a clear signal of our shared commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and promoting academic excellence, particularly in the economic sectors.
The US is also increasing Fulbright scholarships for students and launching the Vietnam Student Research Program for doctoral students. To date, the Fulbright program and the Vietnam Education Foundation have helped 600 individuals have the opportunity to study for Masters and PhD degrees at US universities.
American education always attracts international students
Evaluating the US training program and why it attracts Vietnamese students, sharing with PV of Dan Viet newspaper, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Trung Thanh, Director of the Institute of International Education (ISME), National Economics University said: "The US training program follows the philosophy of liberal education and the university program lasts 4 years. In the first two years, students study a variety of subjects, including dance, culture, religion, technology... In their thinking, the program must be designed so that before entering the major, students have broad general knowledge. Americans also focus on practical thinking. They use their brains and science to apply in practice. The US always attracts talents in many fields. This is a job opportunity for Vietnamese students after graduation. Those are the suitable and attractive points for Vietnamese students when choosing the US as a place to study abroad.
After studying abroad in the US, I appreciate that students are very proactive, independent, creative, innovative, and have many different approaches when solving problems.

If they do not have the conditions to study abroad in the US, Vietnamese students can choose a joint study program such as the IBD.US@NEU International Bachelor Program at the National Economics University with two universities, Boise State University and Andrews University in the US. Associate Professor Thanh said: "The form of joint training will continue to increase in the near future. The advantage of the "on-site study abroad" form is that students have time to study in Vietnam to practice their learning methods and quickly integrate into the international environment. In terms of costs, the financial pressure of studying abroad in the US is very large, so studying the 2+2 model is lighter in cost and has higher scholarship opportunities. In addition, the joint study model ensures the preservation of Vietnamese culture and working environment, suitable for families with children who want their children to work in Vietnam in an international environment".
